REPORTS TO: Branch Manager

SALARY: $23.50 - $24.21/hour

HOURS: Full Time - 40 Hours Weekly

LOCATION: Al Davies Branch - 1620 S. 17th St. Tacoma, WA 98405

ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

The Boys & Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound (BGCSPS) is a non-profit organization that CHANGES LIVES through quality programs and guidance in a safe, affordable, and fun environment. BGCSPS’s mission is to inspire all young people, especially those who need us most, empowering them to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible members of their community. We have been providing a safe, fun, and positive environment at our sites with trained and dedicated professional staff for more than 80 years. Members are involved in age-appropriate activities based upon our three priority outcomes of Academic Success, Character Development, and Healthy Lifestyles.

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Branch Manager, the Assistant Branch Manager (ABM) will continue to perform all of the duties of the Youth Development Professional as stated in the job description. Additional responsibilities include assisting the Branch Manager with overall Core program management, participant supervision, program planning, and implementation of actions. Provide coaching, support, and direction to program staff. Ensure the continued operations of the site when the Branch Manager is not present. Adhere to behavior management policy while exercising authority in problems relating to members. Interface with volunteers assigned to specific programs to ensure proper application. Promote safety of members, quality of programs, and appearance of the Club at all times. Ensure afternoon programming is dynamic, exciting, safe, and fun.

FUNCTION/TASKS

PREPARE YOUTH FOR SUCCESS

  • Plan, deliver, and oversee designated Clubhouse programs and activities that support Youth Development Outcomes.
  • Establish Clubhouse program objectives consistent with organizational goals & mission.
  • Oversee the provision of day-to-day program activities in accordance with established standards and goals.
  • Create an environment where members are encouraged to participate in a variety of program areas/activities & receive instruction and constructive feedback to develop skills in program area(s).
  • Demonstrate skills & provide leadership to assure conduct, safety & development of members.

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION

  • Establish and maintain program goals and settings that maximize the health and safety of members. Make sure that site staff understand and effectively communicate standards; ensure program areas are safe, well ventilated, and well lit; and that Club equipment is maintained in good working condition.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of programs on a continual basis and that programs and activities respond to member needs.
  • Control program and activity expenditures within the approved budget in collaboration with Branch Manager.

SUPERVISION

  • Allocate and monitor work assigned, provide ongoing feedback and regular appraisal. Complete performance evaluations on all Youth Development Professionals. Identify and support training and development opportunities for assigned volunteers and staff.
  • Hire program staff within program guidelines in collaboration with Branch Manager.
  • Oversee proper record keeping and reporting including activities and events, breakdowns of daily participation figures, notable achievements and any incidents/accidents.
  • Effectively plan & lead programs, services & a variety of activities for members; promotes and stimulates program participation. Responsible for daily set-up and clean-up of all materials used during the program.
  • Monitor & evaluate programs, services & activities to ensure safety of members, quality of programs and appearance of the branch at all times. Prepare periodic activity reports and/or grant reports.
  • Supervise members in the program area. Position yourself in the program area to continually monitor and supervise the safety and behavior of members. Focus on maintaining a safe, positive atmosphere for all youth.
  • Provide positive behavior guidance that supports the developmental, social-emotional, & physical needs of all members.
  • Create a safe environment that facilitates the achievement of Youth Development Outcomes; promote and stimulate program participation; provide guidance and role modeling to members.
  • Provide effective and positive customer service by responding timely to parent, staff, and school district requests in a professional and timely manner.
  • Knowledge of program planning/instruction, implementation, and assessment; provide instruction, direction, coaching, and guidance.
  • Proficient computer skills – Microsoft Office, email, internet research, Google navigation.
  • Experience in tutoring and mentoring children or youth; motivate, engage, and manage behavioral challenges with peer mediation.
  • Work ethic to be responsible, accountable, provide follow up, complete tasks, and meet deadlines in a professional manner with accuracy and on schedule; regular and predictable attendance.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee special programs and/or events (i.e. Keystone, Youth of the Year and Awards Programs), and/or participate in the implementation of other Club activities as necessary.
  • Establish & maintain supportive relationships with schools & others in the respective communities around branches. Visit schools, colleges & universities to promote Club programs and membership.
  • Participate in community engagement activities as assigned by Branch Manager.
  • Meet with parents concerning member and branch issues to include discipline in alignment with the Behavior Management Policy, as well as other identified needs or activities.
  • Other duties as assigned related to this position.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of 21 years of age; AA Degree and/or two (2) years experience in related field.
  • A minimum of two years work experience in a Boys & Girls Club or similar organization planning, supervising staff and supervising activities based on the developmental needs of young people.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and evaluate the work of others.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Intermediate technology skills including but not limited to Google Workspace and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Group leadership skills, including an understanding of group dynamics and ability to run group activities in various program spaces, as well as outdoors on playing fields.
  • Demonstrated organizational, staff and project management abilities.
  • Experience in working effectively and productively with young people, parents, and community leaders.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, which may include evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
  • Mandatory CPR and First Aid Certifications – may be obtained on the job.
  • Must pass national criminal background check
  • Driving
  • Must have a reliable personal vehicle for business related travel.
  • Valid WA State driver’s license with acceptable 3 year MVR - driving record.
  • Verification of Tier 2 Insurance standards.
  • Willingness to travel within a designated region for community partnership visits and business meetings.
  • Ability to successfully complete van driving; drug screen testing, training & requirements.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

To keep our staff safe we adhere to the CDC safety guidelines and remain in close communication with local health departments, program partners, and local School Districts to work together to serve our youth in the safest way we can.

Skills essential for successful communications include speaking and writing. Physical requirements include sight, hearing, being active and on your feet for a minimum of four hours; adapt to changes in a highly energetic work environment; other duties as assigned.
