POSITION DESCRIPTION:
TITLE: Unit Director
PERFORMANCE PROFILE SOURCE: Management Professional
DEPARTMENT: Programs
REPORTS TO: Program Director
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Directs and manages overall daily operations of a unit under the control of the organization with the primary concern for a comprehensive, outcome-driven program and service delivery. Also supervises and trains staff (direct and indirect reports), handles personnel issues, manages facility, develops and manages a budget, actively engages and supports the program committee, and manages community relations, volunteers, and membership administration.
KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities):
Leadership
- Establish Unit programs, activities and services that prepare youth for success and create an outcome-driven Club experience that facilitates achievement of youth development outcomes.
- Ensure a healthy, safe environment, with well-maintained facilities, equipment and supplies.
- Typically manages 10-20 staff (direct and indirect)
Strategic Planning
- Plan, develop, implement and evaluate Unit overall programs, services and activities to ensure they meet stated objectives and member needs and interests. Compile regular reports reflecting all activities, attendance and participation.
- Perform regular facility walkthroughs making recommendations for improvements.
- Responsible for completing federal grant reports and ensure compliance with all applicable federal grant guidelines.
Resource Management
- Manage Unit financial resources, assisting in the development of annual budgets. Control expenditures against budget.
- Ensure administrative and operational systems are in place to maintain the operation of the Club’s physical properties and equipment, including use of facilities by outside groups. Ensure compliance with organization policies.
- Recruit, manage and provide career development opportunities for Unit staff and volunteers. Conduct regular staff meetings.
Partnership Development
- Develop partnerships with parents, community leaders and organizations.
Marketing and Public Relations
- Develop and maintain public relations to increase the visibility of programs, services and activities within the Club and the community.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Purchase or approve purchase of supplies and equipment.
- Work with staff on special events to carry out programs in all departments.
- Exercise authority in problems relating to members; utilize guidance and discipline plan.
- Assume other duties as assigned.
RELATIONSHIPS:
Internal: Maintain close, daily contact with Club professional staff to interpret and explain organizational mission, program objectives and standards, discuss issues, and provide/receive information. Regular contact with members as needed to discipline, advise, and counsel.
External: Maintain contact with external community groups, schools, members' parents and others to assist in resolving problems and to publicize Club.
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in social work, education, family services, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- A minimum of five years' work experience in a Boys & Girls Club or similar organization planning and supervising activities based on the developmental needs of young people, or equivalent experience
- Demonstrated ability in personnel supervision, facilities management, and the recruitment and retention of key personnel
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written
- Ability to recruit, train, supervise and motivate staff
- Ability to deal effectively with members and caregivers including discipline problems
- Working knowledge of budget preparation, control and management
- Demonstrated ability in working with young people, parents and community leaders.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The Unit Director role requires the ability to be physically present and actively engaged in a dynamic youth-centered environment. While much of the work involves managing staff, programs, and operations, the position also requires mobility throughout the facility, including walking, standing, and occasional participation in youth activities.
The role may involve lifting or moving supplies or equipment up to 25 pounds. Visual and auditory acuity is necessary for ensuring safety and program quality. Work is performed in indoor program spaces, offices, and outdoor areas, with occasional exposure to varying weather conditions and moderate noise levels.
The environment is fast paced, with frequent interruptions and shifting priorities, requiring flexibility, multitasking, and strong decision-making skills. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to work under the pressure of deadlines in a fast-paced environment, where constructive feedback from others is encouraged.
Must have excellent conflict resolution skills and the ability to lead and participate as a team leader or team member in a team’s conflict resolution and consensus building process, as well as assist in maintaining positive team morale and team cohesion.
Ability to think independently and provide self-direction, solve various problems and make informed, rational decisions.
