What are the responsibilities and job description for the Grant Accountant position at Boys Town?

Boys Town is seeking a rock star, an individual who is mission driven and passionate about helping others. Do you strive to lead, follow, and act with integrity? In the role of Grant Accountant, you will be responsible for providing support to all aspects of managing grants.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
  • Supervises the development and maintenance of research budgets covering all Institute & extramural funds.
  • Utilizes knowledge of federal grant & research contract accounting & reporting requirements, communicating directly with researchers, to assure proper resolution of budget issues, concerns & satisfaction of inquiries and to ensure the compliance with federal rules and regulations.
  • Oversees grant & research contract travel, purchasing card, & capital expenditures systems.
  • Undertakes special operational & analytical cost studies concerning both BTNRH & grants, as assigned by the Director of Research.
  • Assists in the preparation of the BTNRH Hospital central operating budget & detailed reports submitted to federal agencies.
  • Prepares post-award budgets, centralized direct payments, adjusting & closing research entries & ensures month end close schedules are met.
  • Reviews grants & contract proposals for accuracy, reasonableness, consistency with existing grants & contracts, & any unusual provisions or audit requirements.
  • Analyzes financial statement information for trends, deviations or problem areas, prepares reports on exceptional fluctuations from projections & prior years, & discusses them with appropriate management.
  • Assists in the implementation of appropriate accounting & budgetary systems, controls, reports & records necessary to support the financial operation of BTNRH.
  • Attends corporate compliance committee meetings & collaborates with compliance officer on research compliance issues.
  • Compares & reviews financial status on all required interim & closeout reports for grants & contracts.
  • Oversees the completion & accuracy of grant time & effort reports.
  • Queues up changes in the distribution of research effort as needed & follows through to assure accurate & timely postings.
  • Maintains grant & research contract historical & authorized signer databases.
  • Works with staff to interpret NIH, FFBH & BTNRH policies concerning budgetary, financial, accounting, purchasing & related grant business matters.
  • Responsible for all grant & research contract revenue accounting functions of BTNRH & participates in maintaining & recommending revisions in the revenue & receivable control procedures.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Ability to apply generally accepted accounting principles to various aspects of accounting operation & to communicate concisely, both orally & in writing with all levels of management.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of federal grant accounting procedures necessary to oversee maintenance, reimbursement & disbursement of all grant & research contract revenue and expenditures.
  • Ability to research, analyze, & write both regular as well as special reports in a clear & concise manner.
  • Ability to operate a P.C., spreadsheet software, 10-key calculator & other office equipment as necessary.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of integrity, confidentiality & professionalism.
  • Ability to solve practical problems & deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardizations exist.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's Degree in accounting, finance, or business administration or minimum of 5 years accounting experience required.
  • Experience with personal computers and excel spreadsheets required.
  • General ledger accounting and financial analysis experience required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Previous grant financial accounting experience preferred.
