What are the responsibilities and job description for the Fire Training Captain position at Bozeman, City of (MT)?

The Bozeman Fire Department is now accepting applications for a Training Captain who will design, implement, and oversee departmental training program and may act as fire ground incident commander or Incident Safety Officer within the Incident Command System.

Fair Labor Standards Act Status: Non-Exempt
Work Week: Typically 40/hours week.
Rate of Pay: 
FY24: $8,636.39/month
FY25 (effective July 1st, 2024): $9,197.75/month

Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)
  • Designs, implements, and oversees departmental training program;
  • May act as a fire ground incident commander or Incident Safety Officer within the Incident Command System as directed;
  • Interprets, explains, and ensures compliance with Fire Department policies and procedures as assigned;
  • Oversees personnel and apparatus at training sessions;
  • If qualified, may oversee personnel and apparatus at fires and hazardous materials incidents, as assigned; Evaluates departments training needs and makes recommendations accordingly including development of training budgets;
  • Prepares long term departmental training program;
  • Assists staff in navigating the Department professional development plan;
  • Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions;
  • Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;
  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas;
  • Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;
  • Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;
  • Performs other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the classification.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent; and
  • Three (3) municipal structural fire department experience, some experience preparing and administering fire department training programs preferred; and
  • Possession of each of the following or the ability to earn within six months.
    • Incident Command System 300
    • IFSAC/Pro Board Fire Officer I certification
    • IFSAC/Pro Board Instructor I certification
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and procedures of modern firefighting, fire prevention, fire administration and related emergency response practices, for both wildland and structure fires;
  • Thorough knowledge of and skill in the operation of the various types of apparatus and equipment used in the Fire Department;
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices involved in instructing personnel in the use and care of equipment and various techniques of fire fighting; the ability to apply this knowledge to specific training problems and programs;
  • Thorough knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Fire Department;
  • Thorough knowledge of the geography of the City of Bozeman, to include the location of streets and principal buildings;
  • Thorough knowledge of pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations including those pertaining to fire suppression and personnel supervision, performance evaluation and training;
  • Ability to perform as a fire ground incident commander or Incident Safety Officer;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with assigned supervisors, other employees, and the general public;    
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language;
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions;
  • Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations;
  • Ability to operate or quickly learn to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks;
  • Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions;
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;
  • Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology;
  • Ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.
  • Consistently performs assignments in accordance with the City’s Core Values of Integrity, Leadership, Service and Teamwork.
  • Must obtain Blue Card Incident Command Certification within 12 months of hire;
  • Must possess a valid Montana Class D Driver’s License or have the ability to obtain one within 60 days of employment;
  • Offers for employment are conditional upon satisfactory responses to thorough background and reference check process and medical examination;
