Neurosurgery Physician Assistant-Surgical First Assist/Nurse Practitioner Job Description:
Neurosurgery Physician Assistant/ Nurse Practitioner extends the services of physicians by providing patient care pre and post-op. PA/NP will assist physicians in surgical procedures. This position will also provide coordination and clinical services across the continuum of care for surgical patients. Neurosurgical PA/NP will work in conjunction with a supervising neurosurgeon, pre-op and post-op, to take detailed medical histories, perform physical exams, interpret lab results, make diagnoses, and discuss and implement in- and out-patient treatment. Hospital duties include assisting in neurosurgical procedures, closing wounds, ordering and reviewing MRIs and CT scans, hospital rounds and consults, interpreting diagnostic tests and counseling patients about treatment. Perform admission history, order labs and tests. Responsible for rounding on patients in hospital including ICU. Writes orders and progress notes as well as preparing discharge documents. Will handle patient calls and prescription refill requests. This position operates under physician directed protocols for all Advanced Care Practitioner duties. Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner with at least 1 year of surgical experience is required for this position. Operating room experience, preferably in neurosurgery, is required. This position supports the neurosurgeons for ER and group call. Required 10 days of trauma call a month. Travel between hospitals, surgery center and clinics. Collaborate with Surgeons and clinical staff to provide optimal patient outcomes.
Required Education:
- Master's degree and/or passing the Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner National Certifying Examination (PA-C, NP, APRN)
- At least 1 year experience in a Surgical Specialty. (preferred) On the Job Neurosurgical Training will be provided.
- Current Florida license as a Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner prior to start date required.
Experience:
Minimum 1 year of Surgical OR Experience preferred
A year of on-the-job training is required to specialize in Neurosurgery Assisting. Neurosurgical PA/NP will also need to complete 100 hours of continued medical education every two years and pass a re-certification exam every six years in order to keep their PA certifications active.
Essential Skills:
Neurosurgical PA/NP must have a good bedside manner. Must be able to make precise emergency decisions quickly while providing superior patient care. Physicians assistants must also be self-motivated and organized as they will perform many duties and juggle large numbers of patients without immediate supervision.
