What are the responsibilities and job description for the Accountant II position at Brevard County Sheriff's Office?

The purpose of the class is to perform accounting and budgetary functions and financial management reporting in conformance with generally accepted accounting principles and budgetary guidelines.


The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional related tasks as necessary.
  • Prepare, examine, and reconcile accounting records, financial statements and other financial reports to assess accuracy, completeness, and procedural standards.
  • Prepare and post G/L entries, reconcile general ledger balances to detail journal or supporting information, record general journal entries and run or prepare financial reports.
  •  Prepare periodic reports and adjustments.
  •  Monitor, maintain and reconcile bank accounts and positive pay bank files, resolving any discrepancies.
  • Prepare performance reports and other government reimbursement requests.
  • Assist Financial Auditors with financial and technical support for annual or special audits.
  • Perform internal audit functions as assigned.
  • Prepare routine and special reports and other special projects as assigned.
  • File and maintain records in compliance with the Document Retention Policy.
  • Assists customers and co-workers in a friendly manner with issues in person, via phone and/or email.
  • Provide support to the Finance Director and other department staff by researching budget variances, assisting with documenting policies and procedures, assisting with grant administration and/or special projects, researching financial records, drafting correspondence, and other duties as assigned.
  • Regular, dependable and punctual attendance is an essential function of this job.
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting or Finance.
  • A minimum of (2) years of experience performing budget development or accounting related functions preferred.
  • Experience in governmental accounting preferred.
  •  Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite (specific proficiency in Microsoft Excel).
  • Strong work ethics with an attention to detail
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Preference will be given to those candidates with Governmental Accounting Experience
  • Friendly, courteous, professional, and customer-service oriented.
Work is conducted in an office environment. Work is performed during normal business hours, Monday - Friday 8am-5pm; fluctuations to work hours, if any, are minimal.

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a comprehensive background investigation, which includes a polygraph examination and criminal history review. Candidates must also pass a pre-employment drug screening. While employed, individuals will be subject to return-to-duty, post-accident, random, and reasonable suspicion drug testing.
