Broad Porch Coffee, in beautiful downtown Luray Virginia, home of the Shenandoah National Park and the Shenandoah River, is looking for an experienced specialty coffee Production Roaster to join our roastery team. This is a great opportunity for a passionate, specialty coffee professional to run the roasting operation for our small but rapidly growing company which is soon to be the largest specialty roastery in the Shenandoah Valley. We currently roast for our 3 cafe locations and multiple wholesale clients which range from local cafes and bakeries to large institutions like Valley Health Hospital System and James Madison University (JMU).
We are seeking a Roaster with 2 years of production roasting and specialty coffee industry experience who will lead the production team, refine and create systems and efficiencies, roast and deliver coffee and as well as provide training for wholesale clients.
Primary Duties and Requirements
- Work with the production team, create a roast plan and schedule for the day/week. Strong math skills are necessary to understand blend ratios and proportions.
- Production roasting as well as packaging and shipping as required.
- Development and maintaining of roast profiles.
- Maintain on-site inventories of green and roasted coffees, as well as packaging supplies.
- Help source new coffees and perform SCA standard cuppings for purchase considerations.
- Perform routine care, maintenance and troubleshooting of all roastery equipment.
- Deliver coffee to wholesale clients within our delivery radius.
- Train wholesale clients on best practices for brewing our coffee with their equipment, drip or espresso.
- Specialty Coffee Experience: Must have 2 years experience roasting specialty coffee. Must have experience using SCA cupping protocols. Must have experience brewing coffee on drip and espresso machines in commercial applications. Not required, but preferred to have some barista experience.
- Teamwork: Demonstrated ability to work with and adapt to a diverse group of people towards a common goal. We are a small company and value input from all employees. The ideal candidate will be willing to lead, listen, and contribute to conversations.
- Systems: Manage existing production systems and implement new systems as needed to maximize production efficiency.
- Proactive: Anticipate challenges and take proactive measures to address them. Should recurring challenges arise, should be able to identify and, working with their team, propose and execute solutions efficiently and in a timely manner.
- Communication Skills: Clear and effective communication skills within the team and the company regarding all roasting activities and wholesale client communications.
- Physical demands: Able to lift 50-70lbs. Standing and walking 6-8 hours per day. Work includes bending, twisting, squatting, lifting, and reaching.
