Highway Maintenance Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • On the job training
  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on highways and roads in Brule County.
  • Operate heavy-duty equipment, such as plows, graders, and loaders, to clear snow, remove debris, and repair road surfaces.
  • Inspect highways and roads regularly to identify and address any safety hazards or maintenance needs.
  • Perform preventative maintenance tasks, including patching potholes and cracks, striping roads, and applying road salt or sand.
  • Spraying of County right of ways
  • Removal of trees in County right of ways
  • Collaborate with other highway maintenance personnel to ensure effective operations and timely completion of tasks.
  • Adhere to safety guidelines and use personal protective equipment to minimize the risk of accidents.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to obtain a Commercial Drivers License
  • Ability to obtain a Commercial Applicators License
  • Prior experience in highway maintenance or a similar role is preferred.
  • Ability to operate heavy machinery and perform basic repairs.
  • Physical fitness and stamina to perform manual labor in varying weather conditions, lift at least 100 lbs.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities.

Benefits include health, dental, vision and life insurance; vacation and sick leave, SD Retirement. Hours of operation are Monday - Thursday (10 hour days) during the summer months, Monday - Friday (8 hour days) during the winter months. Occassional work on weekends if snow removal is necessary or other emergency operations. Overtime and Holiday pay.  12 paid holidays per year.
