What are the responsibilities and job description for the Camp - Teen Coordinator - LIT position at Buckeye Valley Family YMCA?

POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for leading, directing and implementing a structured, educational and recreational summer training program adapted for older campers ages 13-16.  The program shall prepare them for a role as a future camp counselor/Y leader and activities shall promote problem-solving, teamwork and leadership skills.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS include the following, other duties may be assigned:

  • Oversee the daily operation and safety of the Counselor & Leaders in Training program.
  • Plan and implement recreational and educational programs and trainings (field trips and special guests) that emphasize group participation with an appropriate amount of choice.
  • Create an active, progressive and engaging environment through supervision and mentoring.
  • Maintain staff/child ratio as set by the American Camp Association.
  • Ensure that all health and safety requirements as described in the YMCA Child Care Risk Management guidelines and the State of Ohio Child care regulations are maintained.
  • Complete administrative work to include but not limited to scheduling group assignments, ensure supplies for activities are available when needed, creation of a newsletter of events/activities and planning fundraiser and special events.
  • Actively participates in and takes ownership of all aspects of camp program, including special events, opening and closing of camp, and extended hours. 
  • Provide guidance and serve as a positive role model to campers, teens and staff.
  • Report all staffing and camp concerns to supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Manage confidential information.
  • Maintain accurate, complete and timely program records including but is not limited to attendance sheets, sign in/out documents and accident/incident reports.
  • Set-up and break down all program supplies and equipment.
  • Attend all staff meetings, trainings, fundraising events and trips.

Child Protection Responsibilities:

  • Adheres to policies related to boundaries with youth.
  • Participates in required abuse risk management training.
  • Adheres to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising youth.
  • Reports suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
  • Follows mandated abuse reporting requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age and have high school diploma or GED; one year of college coursework and experience working with teens preferred.  
  • Previous demonstrated experience working with diverse populations.
  • CPR, First Aid, AED certifications, Management of Communicable Disease and Child Abuse Prevention training.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, waks, sit and talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions and required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and distance vision. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
