A Day In The Life:
The Commercial Manager is responsible for overseeing commercial origination, trading activities, and business development for a specific location within the grain commodity industry. This role involves leading a team of merchandisers, partnering with Operations Managers to ensure safety and profitability, and driving business growth through strategic planning and customer engagement.
What You’ll Be Doing:
- Manage grain origination and trading activities at the location.
- Execute commercial strategies to meet regional goals for volume, margin, and profitability.
- Manage facility financials, including budgeting, forecasting, new trades, etc.
- Monitor market trends and competitor activities to identify opportunities for growth and risk mitigation.
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of merchandisers, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives.
- Foster a collaborative and high-performance culture, emphasizing accountability and continuous improvement.
- Conduct regular performance evaluations, provide feedback, and identify professional development opportunities for team members.
- Coordinate with location Operations Manager to ensure the safe, efficient, and profitable operation of grain facilities.
- Collaborate on capacity planning, logistics, and inventory management to meet customer and market demands.
- Support the implementation of safety programs and ensure adherence to regulatory and company standards.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key customers, producers, and industry partners.
- Negotiate contracts, develop tailored solutions, and ensure high levels of customer satisfaction.
- Identify & pursue new business opportunities to expand the company's market presence/ increase market share.
- Manage the location P&L, ensuring revenue and profitability targets are achieved.
- Purchase and sell assigned commodities from/to targeted customers by providing them with excellent marketing analysis and recommendations. Co-manage customer logistics and inventories to maximize their operating efficiencies.
- Daily activities include logistics management of commodity contracts, customer/supplier communications for the purpose of the sales and purchasing of the specific commodity, market analysis activity in conjunction with a senior merchandiser, accounts receivable management and various other tasks related to commodity merchandising.
- Trade/arbitrage prudently to maximize income opportunities.
- Other duties as assigned.
- BS/BA in Marketing, Finance, Ag Business, Ag Economics or Economics is preferred.
- 3-5 years of experience in grain origination, commodity trading, or related roles, with a strong track record of leadership.
- Aggressive, self-motivated and able to work under pressure.
- Excellent communications, computer and public relations skills.
- Strong quantitative and analytical skills. Experience with P&L management is preferred.
- Strong problem solving and conceptual thinking capabilities.
- Exceptional communication, interpersonal and leadership abilities.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
- Ability to handle multiple concurrent projects.

- Based in a regional office with occasional travel to grain facilities, customer locations, and industry events.
