What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Food Services position at Burlington Public Schools?
Administer the food service program in a multiple-site program according to policies and procedures, and federal/state requirements, in a fiscally responsible manner. Supervise and train food service personnel. Develop and maintain high standards of food preparation and service with emphasis on menu appeal and nutritional value. Facilitate cooperation with education partners such as administrators, teachers, parents and students.
Essential Functions:
- Plan and analyze menus for all schools in the district to ensure that USDA Meal Pattern and nutritional requirements are met.
- Establish measurable program goals and annual objectives; assist in policy development.
- Plan menu adaptations to meet the nutritional requirements for children with special dietary needs.
- Maintain a purchasing system consistent with USDA and state purchasing guidelines, ensuring that all inventories meet published safety guidelines. Implement a cost effective procurement and inventory control plan.
- Develop purchasing guidelines to ensure food products and supplies reflect customer preferences, district needs, and nutritional objectives.
- Assess customer preference, industry trends and current research to develop a long range plan that facilitates continuous program improvement.
- Enforce federal and state regulations regarding nutritional standards, reports and records. Prepare and maintain all records for required audits and reviews. Address all issues resulting from all audits and inspections.
- Recommend and monitor recruiting, hiring, and training processes for food service employees and substitutes. Supervise and evaluate all food service personnel.
- Oversee the administration of the district’s free and reduced price meals program according to federal regulations.
- Prepare, monitor and administer the food services budget. Monitor and analyze all revenue sources. Investigate opportunities for reductions in revenues.
- Maintain records of income and expenditures, food, supplies, inventory, personnel and equipment.
- Coordinate all equipment maintenance and repairs with the appropriate school district personnel or a private service provider.
- Ensure that established sanitation and safety standards are maintained.
- Develop a marketing plan that promotes the school nutrition services to students, parents, other school personnel, and the community.
- Pursue and implement State, Federal and private grants.
Recommended Minimum Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
A Bachelor’s degree in Food Service and Nutrition or Business Management (or a closely related field) along with 5 years of progressively responsible experience in managing Food Service for a multi-site K-12 school food service program (or comparable setting) is preferred. ServSafe certification required.
General Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of USDA food and nutrition service’s nutritional requirements for K-12.
- Considerable knowledge of quantity food production and serving techniques, food safety/sanitation requirements and procedures.
- Knowledge of basic spreadsheet, word processing, and point-of-sale software, as necessary for the efficient operation of the food service program;
- Ability to maintain records and complete reports, in accordance with State regulations and DESE.
- Demonstrated ability in supervising food service personnel and working as an effective team leader.
- Interpersonal, organizational, and problem solving skills.
- Effective written and oral communication skills.
- An understanding of, and ability to administer, food service program finances and budget.
- Skill in using public relations techniques to promote the food service program to children, school personnel and the public.
- Ability to travel independently to between school locations and to meetings outside of the District.
- Ability to satisfy attendance requirements.
