What are the responsibilities and job description for the Surgery Tech Extern position at Cabell Huntington Hospital/St. Mary?
Within the framework of the hospital and nursing service policies and procedures, the primary purpose of this position is to carry out routine and assigned Surgical Technologist tasks and assist the Surgical Technologist with carrying out patient care activities within the scope of training and experience.
The individual must possess skills and competencies necessary to provide care to patients ranging in age from neonate to geriatric. The primary purpose is to provide safe and efficient care to ensure quality patient outcomes. The Surgical Technologist Trainee will be responsible for assisting with setting up the operating room, ensuring equipment and supplies are available and in working order, assisting with patient positioning and surgical prep. The Surgical Technologist extern will assist the Surgical Technologist and surgeon throughout the procedure by maintaining a sterile field, holding retractors, passing surgical instruments, facilitating case turnover, and ensuring proper instrument and equipment care post procedure.
The Surgical Technologist Trainee shall not participate in the preparation, management, or administration of medications. The Surgery Technologist Trainee may provide support when additional staff are needed under direct supervision of a precepting Surgical Technologist. This position will never scrub alone.
