What are the responsibilities and job description for the Office Maintenance Worker position at CalHR?

Under direction, performs a variety of semi-skilled work for repair and maintenance of County buildings and equipment;-performs janitorial duties, and other work as assigned.
 
Incumbents in this class perform custodial duties as well as minor building maintenance duties, including basic carpentry, painting, and plumbing.
 
This class is distinguished from the classification of Building Maintenance Worker in that the latter requires considerable skill in the repair and maintenance of buildings and equipment.
 
This class is distinguished from the classification of Custodian in that incumbents perform basic building maintenance tasks as well as custodial duties.
  1. Sweeps, mops, scrubs, waxes and buffs floors, as well as vacuums, shampoos and steam cleans carpets
  2. Dusts and polishes furniture
  3. Maintains restrooms in a sanitary condition and replenishes supplies
  4. Hangs drapes and curtains
  5. Opens buildings and/or locks exterior doors and turns off lights
  6. Washes windows
  7. Sets up rooms for meetings or may move and arrange office furniture
  8. Replaces light bulbs, resets breakers, replaces broken outlet covers, etc.
  9. Makes minor repairs on toilets and faucets, such as tightening or replacing toilet seats, replacing faucet seals
  10. Repairs cement, plaster, stone and brickwork; textures walls; patches floors
  11. Adjusts doors for proper opening and closing
  12. Repairs, assembles or adjusts furniture and shelving. May be involved with disassembly, loading on moving trucks, reassembly and setting up furniture in new locations.
  13. Hangs bulletin boards, clocks, and lightweight pictures and fixtures
  14. Uses a variety of hand tools to accomplish maintenance tasks
  15. Lowers and/or raises office workers' desks for ergonomic reasons
  16. May assist the plumber or building maintenance worker on a variety of maintenance functions
  17. Performs minor painting projects, including preparing surfaces for painting, painting walls, furniture, and other surfaces
Knowledge and Skills:
  1. Working knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in janitorial work
  2. Some knowledge of the methods, practices, materials, equipment and tools used in minor maintenance repairs
  3. Some knowledge of safety techniques of the building maintenance trade
  4. Some knowledge of the safe and proper methods for using hand and power tools
Ability To:
  1.  Read and write English at a level necessary for successful job performance
  2. Follow oral and written instructions
  3. Maintain simple records
  4. Perform a full range of janitorial duties
  5. Learn to perform basic building maintenance tasks, such as basic carpentry, painting and plumbing tasks
  6. Use standard hand and power tools utilized to make minor repairs
  7. Work cooperatively with supervisors, co-workers and others contacted in the course of duty
  8. Read, understand and apply procedures, precautionary cards, and product cleaning labels, instructions in equipment maintenance manuals and other instructions as appropriate
  9. Observe safe work practices
REQUIRED CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
As a condition of employment, the incumbent will be required to:
1. A valid California Class C driver's license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment
 
PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS
The physical and sensory abilities required for this classification include:
  1. Work in cramped, confined surroundings and on ladders
  2. Perform heavy, fatiguing work; climbing, pushing, pulling, stooping, and lifting containers, materials and equipment up to 45 pounds
  3. Stamina to perform continuous physical labor during the assigned shift
  4. Dexterity and the ability to reach, grasp, hold, and manipulate small objects and equipment
  5. Mobility to stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, walk and bend to perform cleaning and maintenance tasks
  6. Sense of smell to identify various cleaning agents or unusual odors
  7. Ability to visually detect dust, dirt spills and grime on surfaces to maintain required cleanliness
  8. Willingness and ability to travel to various county locations including Salinas, Seaside and King City
The knowledge, skills and abilities listed above may be acquired through various types of experiences, education or training, typically:

Six months of full-time janitorial work, including some experience in building/office maintenance.
  • The ability to speak, read, and write Spanish in addition to English would be an asset in this position but is not required.
  • Employees who drive on County business to carry out job-related duties must possess a valid CA Driver License for the class vehicle driven. 
  • The Department of Social Services will conduct a thorough background and reference check process which includes a Department of Justice fingerprint check. 
  • Monterey County, like all employers, is required to verify an employee's right to work in the United States. Accordingly, on the first day of employment, employees must have and show those documents that verify their legal right to work in the United States. Examples of accepted documentation are a U.S. Passport or Alien Registration Card, or a driver's license and Social Security Card, or a driver's license and U.S. Birth Certificate. 
  • Additionally, our agency requires a valid social security card in order to process employee paychecks. Accordingly, on the first day of employment, employees must have and show this document. 
  • Government agencies accessing US government information, which includes federal tax information must ensure that background investigation requirements for all agency employees and contractors that have access to federal tax information are consistent with the IRS background investigation requirements for access to federal tax information. A background check may be required if the position requires access to these types of records. Background requirements consist of three components which include, fingerprinting, citizenship verification, and local law enforcement checks. Applicable agencies must conduct an investigation during the time of hire and ensure an investigation is conducted 10 years from the date of the previous background investigation for each employee that has access to federal tax information.

TRAINING & EXPERIENCE EXAMINATION – WEIGHTED 100%
The Training & Experience Examination is designed to elicit a range of specific information regarding each candidate’s knowledge, skill, abilities, and potential to effectively perform the duties relative to the classification. Responses to the questionnaire will be assessed based on pre-determined rating criteria. All applicants must complete the entire examination to receive a score. In order to obtain a position on the eligible list, candidates must receive a minimum rating of 70% on the examination.


MSS is accepting applications on a continuous basis. Qualifying candidates will be notified via email with instructions for completing the examination within 30 days of the date of application.


ELIGIBLE LIST INFORMATION 

A departmental open eligible list will be established for the county of Monterey. The list will be utilized for 12 months after it is established unless the needs of the service and conditions of the list warrant a change in this period.


RETEST PERIOD 

Once you have taken the examination, you may not retest for SIX (6) MONTHS from the established eligibility date. 


SPECIAL TESTING ARRANGEMENTS 

Special testing arrangements may be made to accommodate applicants for disability, military, or religious reasons. Documentation from medical, military, school or church officials outlining the accommodation request must be received by our office a minimum of five business days prior to a scheduled examination.

MSS reserves the right to revise the examination plan to better meet the needs of the recruitment if the circumstances under which this examination was planned change. Such revision will be in accordance with civil service laws and rules and all competitors will be notified.  

If you meet the requirements stated on this bulletin, you may take this examination. Your performance in this examination will be rated against predetermined rating criteria. All competitors who pass will be added to the eligible list. Meeting the entry requirements does not assure success in the examination or placement on the eligible list.

A medical examination may be required. As part of the hiring process, a background investigation may be required.
