Climate Action Fellow at City of Oakland

Location: Oakland, California

Number of Positions Available: 20

Time Commitment: September 16, 2024 - August 15, 2025

This is a full-time, 11-month, 1700-hour program from September 16, 2024 - August 15, 2025. Fellows commit to a 40-hour work week, typically Monday - Friday, approximately 8am - 5pm, with occasional evening and weekend commitments based on project needs. 170-340 of these hours are dedicated to professional development. This is a hybrid position, onsite 3 days per week.

**Please note: Due to the full-time commitment of the Program, students enrolled in undergraduate courses between Sep 16, 2024 - Aug 14, 2025 will not be eligible to participate in the California Climate Action Corps Program.

About the California Climate Action Corps Fellowship

The California Climate Action Corps has over 350 positions available across California for the 2024-25 CCAC Fellowship. This is a climate-focused, workforce development program for emerging climate and environmental leaders. These are paid, full-time fellowships—similar to internships—but with 170-340 dedicated hours for professional development and training while receiving hands-on experience in the climate field.

CCAC Fellows serve as AmeriCorps members and are matched with organizations across California to mobilize communities to take direct climate action and lead projects focused on wildfire resiliency, urban greening, and organic waste diversion and edible food recovery.

Program Benefits

Through this service, Oakland Fellows will build critical relationships within the City and with the County, regional agencies, and community-based organizations. Other benefits include:

  • Receive up to a $33,600 stipend (pre-tax) spread evenly over 11 months

Description of Duties

Join the City of Oakland's cohort of 20 Climate Action Fellows and make a direct impact on climate justice and resiliency in one of the most diverse and dynamic Cities in the country. Collaborate on projects that serve the community while addressing the climate crisis—including edible food recovery, urban greening, wildfire resiliency, and the transition to clean, resilient energy. Our large cohort model encourages leadership, collaborative learning, and builds lasting bonds. Fellows will be embedded within 7 City departments to play key roles in implementing . Fellows will gain a deep understanding of how City government can address climate change through an equity lens, while building connections with Oakland's community partners. We're aiming to build a strong cohort with a wide range of skills and interests. If you're passionate about equity, climate action, and making a difference in Oakland, please apply! Each team will have a range of project goals and activities and Fellows will have opportunities to cross-train with other departments, but the majority of their efforts will be in their assigned departments. All 20 Fellows will have a joint orientation during the first 2 weeks, followed by monthly group check-ins and occasional all-hands events and activities. All projects and activities described below support the City’s Equitable Climate Action Plan, which in turn reduces wildfire risk, supports urban greening, and enables edible food recovery. Duties include, but are not limited to:

Recycling and Zero Waste (Environmental Services Division) (2 Fellows)

  • Increase and enhance outreach and engagement with commercial & multifamily mandatory trash, compost, and recycle services
  • Expand food recovery efforts by establishing food distribution facilities and engaging local food producers to ensure sustainable practices to reduce food waste

Environmental Stewardship (Environmental Services Division) (2 Fellows)

  • Recruit and organize volunteers for city-wide urban greening initiatives and events, including MLK Day of Service, park restorations, and Earth Day celebrations
  • Improve communication and engagement around Adopt-a-Spot programs and volunteer opportunities, bolstering community involvement in environmental stewardship efforts

Urban Greening (Oakland Parks and Recreation Foundation and Oakland Parks, Recreation, and Youth Development Department) (5 Fellows)

  • Assist in executing Oaklandʼs Urban Forest plan by planting trees in frontline communities
  • Revitalize the City’s urban gardens to cultivate community engagement and enable community members to grow food crops
  • Help plan and execute community compost distribution events

Emergency Services Management Division (2 Fellows)

  • Conduct outreach to raise awareness of emergency preparedness trainings, helping communities become more resilient to the effects of climate change
  • Conduct outreach and related to wildfire resilience

Sustainability and Resilience Division (9 Fellows)

  • Plan and execute extensive community engagement related to the City’s Equitable Climate Action Plan, including programs related to urban greening and reducing emissions from organic waste
  • Help develop Resilience Hubs that provide respite from wildfire smoke by collaborating with community partners and City departments
  • Assist with the City’s Economic and Workforce Development Department to help develop a green labor force in Oakland, including urban greening and waste reduction
  • Support policy research, data collection, and analysis that support the Equitable Climate Action Plan

Other duties include:

  • Track program data and analyze results to quantify climate impact

Minimum Program Eligibility Requirements

  • Live in California by August 16, 2024
  • Be at least 18 years of age by September 16, 2024
  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must be a US Citizen, US National, or lawful US resident to participate

Desired Qualifications/Skills

Experience in Volunteer Engagement, Event Coordination, Community Outreach, Environmental Education, Field Experience, Project Management, Public Speaking/Facilitation, Organic Waste/ Edible Food Recovery, Tree Planting/Care, Home Hardening/ Defensible Space, Volunteer Management, Environmental Justice/ Equity, Multi-Stakeholder Collaboration, Graphic Design, Event Planning, GIS / Mapping, Data/ Quantitative Analysis, Policy Analysis/ Development, Technical Writing, and Marketing or Social Media. Local knowledge of Oakland or the greater East Bay is helpful! Other valuable contributions include:

  • An interest in climate change mitigation, volunteerism, or public service
  • Experience with outreach, education, training, or community behavior change
  • Fundamental understanding of climate change science, environmental policies in California, and/or environmental priorities
  • Excellent organizational, writing, interpersonal, and speaking skills
