JOB SUMMARY
The Scrub Nurse is responsible for day-to-day patient care operations and will provide direct patient care according to unit specific needs, and is responsible for assessing, planning, prioritizing, organizing, administering, and evaluating patient care. The Scrub Nurse prepares the surgical suite and assists the team during operative and invasive procedures. Possess expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitates a physician’s performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
- Performs essential functions of clinical Nurse staff related to direct patient care based on unit needs
- Assures the accurate and timely delivery and documentation of patient care, including acknowledgement of physician’s orders, administration of treatments, medications, and related procedures.
- Ensures accurate and complete admission assessment.
- Able to develop patient education plan and prepares discharge and Care plan objectives.
- Ensures compliance with hospital policies, procedures, and quality assurance standards
- Serves as a clinical resource to staff members and assists with daily tasks, decision making and problem solving.
- Uses AIDET format, establishes, maintains, and promotes among staff members positive working relationships with internal and external customers for the effective resolution of concerns in area of responsibility and in support of hospital goals and objectives.
- Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure
- Assist in preparing room
- Scrubs, gown, and gloves
- Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medication/solutions needed for procedure
- Performs appropriate counts with circulator prior to the operation and before incision is closed
- Gowns and gloves surgeon and assistants
- Helps in draping sterile field
- Passes instruments, etc., to surgeon during procedure
- Maintain highest standard of sterile technique during procedure
- Prepares sterile dressings
- Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization
- Assists other members of the team with end of case cleaning and terminal cleaning of surgery and endoscopy rooms
- Performs all aspects of patient care, within scope of practice, in an environment that optimizes safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/healthcare errors for patients and staff.
- Follows written policy/procedures for instrument decontamination
- Preparing endoscopy suit for procedure
- Assist physician during endoscopy procedure
- Follow written policy/procedures for endoscopy decontamination
- Completes annual education and regulatory requirements
- Fulfills on-call requirements
- Circulating duties as needed
- Fulfills Second Assist duties including but not limited to
- o Holds retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon
- o Sponges or suctions operative site
- o Applies electrocautery to clamps on bleeder
- o Cuts suture material as directed by the surgeon
- o Connects drains to suction apparatus
- o Applies dressing to closed wound
- Performs other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduate of accredited professional nursing program as a LPN or RN
- Current LPN or RN license in Indiana
Experience
- Prior hospital nursing role preferred but not required
Skills/Competencies
- Strong analytical and organizational skills to prepare and maintain various documentation/reports in compliance with hospital policies and procedures.
- Strong communication skills promoting teamwork and group achievement as well as one on one communication with patients
Requirements
Education
- Graduate of an accredited professional nursing program as a LPN or RN
- Current LPN or RN license in the State of Indiana
- Current BLS – Healthcare Provider within 3 months of hire
- a. Clinical Ladder 2 = 12 hours of continuing education
- b. Clinical Ladder 3 = 18 hours of continuing education
Licenses
- Current State of Indiana licensure in Nursing
Certifications
- Current BLS-Healthcare provider or within 3 months of hire
- Current PALS certification or within 3 months of hire
