Job Description- Kitchen Utility Staff (Dishwasher)
Position Mission:
Kitchen Utility Staff oversees the dining hall and the kitchen to insure it is maintained in an organized and sanitary manner. Ensuring cleanliness throughout the shift by removing dishes, cleaning surfaced, sweeping and removing wastes as needed. This work helps foster a time of community, reflection, and growth in campers’ and organizations’ experiences through the pleasure of sharing quality food in a warm and clean atmosphere.
Position Purpose:
The Kitchen Utility Staff assists the Kitchen Associate, the Kitchen Lead Cook, and the Executive Chef.
Position Responsibilities:
1) In cooperation with other Camp Magruder employees and volunteers, the assistant head cook shall, in both labor and attitude, seek to fulfill the mission of the camp and retreat ministry of the Oregon-Idaho Conference of the United Methodist Church, which is to provide quality environments of Christian hospitality and learning for all of its visitors.
2) The Kitchen Utility Worker shall work primarily under the direction of the Food Service Manager or Assistant Lead Cook. The employee shall cooperate with periodic performance reviews and setting of job goals as well as camp rules and safety procedures of the Camp Magruder Staff Handbook.
3) Days and hours of work will vary with the available kitchen work and scheduled by the Food Service Manager.
4) It shall be understood that kitchen work will bring exposure to extremes of heat and cold, wet slippery floors requiring appropriate shoes, hot greasy foods, and cutting blades. Kitchen Utility Workers spend long hours on their feet. The employee must be able to lift and carry at least 50 pounds (e.g. sacks of flour, mixing kettle, etc.) Kitchen work and the presence of large number of campers can create noisy work conditions. Regular attention must be given to personal and job safety. Employees shall respond immediately to assist cleanup of hazardous spills and report to the Food Service Manager or the Camp Director of any concerns about sanitation, safety or needed repairs.
5) The employee shall practice sanitation and food safety, including attention to personal cleanliness, appropriate hand washing and maintaining food within the safe temperature zones. All kitchen staff shall maintain a current Tillamook County Food Handlers Certification, which the camp will help provide.
6) The employee shall develop and encourage safe work habits and safe work environments to guard the physical safety and health of one’s self and fellow workers. The employee shall report the symptoms of a communicable disease to the Food Service Manager or Camp Director and be excused from work until full recovery. A fever is judged as a communicable disease symptom.
7) The Primary duties of the Kitchen Utility Worker are:
- Make fresh sanitize buckets at the start of each shift. Change them every four hours or as needed throughout the workday.
- Thoroughly clean, sanitize, and put away all dishes, pots, and pans, paying close attention to kitchen
organization. If the designated area is dirty, sanitize before you put any clean items away.
- Empty trash, compost, and sort recycling bins from dining room and kitchen into the correct areas. Scrub bins with cleaner and brush on the loading dock and replace them to assigned places, once they are dry.
- Reline trash cans with the correct liner.
- Break down all recyclable materials used by the kitchen staff as the accumulate and place into specific bins.
- Responsible for cleaning/mopping up spills in the dining hall and kitchen immediately upon notification.
- Responsible for sweeping/mopping the dining hall and kitchen at the end of each shift.
- Keep dishwasher area and equipment clean throughout shift.
- Make sure all paper products are stocked full throughout the shift.
- Make sure soap dispensers in the Dining Hall are full and ready to use.
- Check salt and pepper shakers in the dining hall and fill when necessary.
- Fill water pitchers and check milk/apple buckets are ready if the Kitchen Associate has not gotten to them already.
- Supply clean dishes to food service lines for each meal as needed.
- Set up and tear down the dish station and sanitize buckets as needed for each meal.
- Help with food service as needed and directed by the Kitchen Assistant Lead Cook of that shift.
- Help the Kitchen Associate put away freight when needed.
- Make sure sinks are ready and filled for the start of KP.
- Wipe down shelves, counter tops, counter fronts, windows, coffee/tea area, and dry storage.
- Work quickly and efficiently with a polite and service-based attitude toward campers, co-workers, and other camp staff.
- Prepare the dining hall for the setting of the hot lines and tables before each meal. Make sure coffee, tea, and juice area all have the supplies as needed for the next meal.
- Make sure Laundry is going if needed during your shift each day.
- At the end of each shift make sure the kitchen bathroom is sanitized, trash is removed, and paper products are resupplied.
Other Specific Duties might include:
- Peeling and slicing fruits and vegetables; Dishing up entrees, condiments, and desserts for table service if needed. Any other food preparation and presentation assigned by the Assistant Lead Cook.

Term of Service: This is a full-time or part-time, seasonal, hourly position.
