Basic Function:

Employees in this class have immediate responsibility for the direction and supervision of school nursing personnel engaged in a variety of school nursing activities. Work also includes responsibility for assisting the school administrator in planning the overall school nursing program. Employees confer with the school administrator in the formulation of work programs but exercise considerable professional judgment in working out the details of activities and in instructing, evaluating and advising staff personnel. Work is reviewed by the school administrator through oral discussion and review of written reports. Does related work as required.

Qualifications:

A. Graduation from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing and four (4) years of experience in nursing, which shall have included two (2) years of experience in a supervisory capacity; OR,
B. Graduation from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university with an Associate’s degree in Nursing and six (6) years of experience in nursing, which shall have included two (2) years of experience in a supervisory capacity.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possess and maintain a license as a registered nurse as issued by New York State. Possession of a CPR Certification at the time of appointment and throughout employment.

Vacancies are filled by certified list provided by Albany County Civil Service. Should no certified list be available, candidates appointed to this position will be serving in a provisional appointment in accordance with New York State Civil Service Law. The candidate must successfully complete a competitive examination and be eligible for appointment in accordance with Civil Service Law and the Civil Service Rules for Albany County to obtain a permanent appointment.

Responsibilities:

1. Supervises the work of subordinates through review of case histories and written reports, by accompanying school nurses on field visits, and by conferences on special problems.
2. Plans and carries out orientation for new members of nursing staff through formal and informal classes and by giving advice on specific problems.
3. Confers with superior concerning the problems of school nursing.
4. Assists in studying and solving such problems and ascertains that approved nursing techniques are properly applied by subordinates supervised.
5. Supervises and participates in the maintenance of records and the preparation of statistical and activity reports relating to school nursing activities and programs.
6. Performs related work as required.
7. Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of professional nursing.
8. Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of school nursing and of their application to specific diseases and social conditions.
9. Thorough knowledge of resources available to persons in need of health services.
10. Good knowledge of the effects of illness on individuals.
11. Good knowledge of current developments in the field of school nursing.
12. Ability to train, instruct and supervise nurses in the principles of and school nursing.
13. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students and their families.
14. Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Starting Salary:

$34.76 – $36.62 per hour
