- High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.)
- Valid Texas Commercial Driver’s License (Class B) with P & S Endorsements
- Must obtain and maintain Texas School Bus Driver Certification
- Must obtain State Inspection Certification within six (6) months
- Must obtain TASBT Master Technician Certificate or ASE Master Certification within 18 months
- Strong knowledge of mechanical systems and vehicle repair
- Proficient in using diagnostic and repair tools and software (e.g., RTA, FuelMaster, Zonar)
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks (lifting, climbing, crawling)
- Basic communication and interpersonal skills
- Familiarity with parts ordering and inventory tracking
- Ability to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and annual physical
- Minimum five (5) years of experience in vehicle repair and maintenance (school district experience preferred)
- Experience working with or guiding other technicians is preferred
- Diagnose and perform repairs on engines, transmissions, brakes, electrical systems, and other components
- Use diagnostic equipment and repair manuals to identify mechanical issues
- Perform routine and preventive maintenance on all district vehicles (yellow and white fleets)
- Conduct state inspections and ensure vehicles meet safety and compliance standards
- Perform welding or minor body work as needed
- Respond to emergency repairs and breakdowns as required
- Assist in scheduling repairs and organizing daily workload based on priority
- Review and complete work orders in the fleet maintenance system
- Support accurate parts usage, ensuring correct parts are logged for each job
- Assist with parts and supply ordering and inventory tracking
- Help maintain shop cleanliness, tool organization, and safe working conditions
- Provide assistance and guidance to shop staff and interns on repairs and safety procedures
- Participate in on-the-job training and mentoring of less-experienced technicians

- Support the development and implementation of shop training or refresher programs under direction
- Drive school buses and other district vehicles as needed

Primary Purpose: Perform skilled mechanical work and assist in coordinating daily vehicle repair and maintenance activities. Provide support and guidance to shop staff while completing hands-on repairs to ensure the safe and efficient operation of all district vehicles. Assist with documentation, review of shop budget, work order tracking, vehicle retention plan, and basic inventory processes under the supervision of the Director of Transportation.
