What are the responsibilities and job description for the Deer Management Program Seasonal Project Assistant position at Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies?
Browsing by overabundant deer damages plant communities and causes declines in other wildlife in those habitats. Controlled, focused hunting has been a management technique used for more than 45 years to prevent excessive deer damage to natural habitats at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook NY. The Deer Management Program Seasonal Project Assistant will gain firsthand expertise in managing controlled, focused hunting programs to promote good land stewardship.
The Project Assistant will assist Cary’s Manager of Field Research with the operation of the Hunter/Deer Check Station. Duties include monitoring hunters and ensuring they sign in and out properly, assisting with removing harvested deer from the field to the Check Station; collecting biological data from harvested deer; patrolling roads to ensure compliance with regulations and discouraging trespassing; Data entry and general clerical duties will also be involved.
Successful candidates must be reliable and conscientious when performing routine tasks. A biology background is preferred. Candidates must be physically able to assist others in dragging deer from the woods to a road, and willing to handle dead deer. The ability to work all specified weekends for the duration of employment is a requirement.
The schedule will include Fridays through Sundays during the following periods: November 17-19, 24-26, December 1-3, and 8-10, 2023. There may be the opportunity to work 1-2 additional weekdays each week during that period depending on our needs and the Assistant’s availability.
This is a temporary, hourly, unbenefited position. All candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S. Finalist candidates must successfully complete a post-offer, pre-employment driving background check.
