Job Description
POSITION OBJECTIVE
Working under general supervision, the Social Sciences Research Assistant 2 will plan and carry out research activities for assigned projects in the Department of Psychological Sciences at Case Western Reserve University on the project School Transition After Traumatic Brain Injury (STATBI): Evaluating the Impact of Participation in a Formal Return-to-School Program for K-12 Students funded by the Centers for Disease Control. As a multi-site mixed-methods study, this position will be responsible for coordinating study activities across sites, overseeing research protocols and day-to-day research activities including recruitment, participant interviews, data management and dissemination to the lay public.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Plan and carry out research activities for assigned projects. Implement recruitment procedures, complete participant consent forms, monitor participant retention, and study conduct throughout the life of the project. (40%)
- Manage screening of potential participants. (20%)
- Support project work of principal investigator through daily project activities and assigned tasks including literature reviews, and report preparation. Implement and/or perform processes to assure study-related procedures are performed as required and objectives and timelines are met. (30%)
- Plan and carry out data collection, cleaning, preparation and analysis. Maintain accurate and timely documentation and communication with investigators, participants, IRB, sponsors and other research-related entities. (10%)
NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Perform other duties as assigned. Coordinate regular study team meetings. May train new staff and/or direct the work of students; supervise lab members who are working to support the project. Work closely with project leads from study sites to coordinate allocation of study resources. (<1%)
CONTACTS
Department: Moderate contact with psychological sciences staff to submit receipts/reimbursements, make purchasing requests, communicate study research progress, communication across labs.
External: Moderate contact with study participants, co-investigator labs and institutions on research progress.
Students: Moderate contact with students to assign and monitor research work, provide instructions to complete tasks, and give input on student projects related to study data.
University: Occasional contact with research compliance staff for IRB, HIPPA and data use agreements.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
Assign and monitor work to others on the project, coordinate with staff members of collaborating labs, and monitor and report performance to the lab principal investigator. Those that will work under the research coordinator include graduate and undergraduate students.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: 1 to 3 years of related experience required.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders or related social science field required (e.g., psychology, cognitive science, social work). Graduate degree preferred.
REQUIRED SKILLS
- Highly organized with strong interpersonal and written communication skills.
- Experience with Microsoft Suite (word, access, excel) and RedCap, email and internet applications/systems, and some course work- or job-related experience with basic statistics.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a small team environment with team members and students.
- Ability to work under general supervision and seek out effective solutions for project related issues.
- Ability to work closely with community-based agencies and interview research participants that have issues with brain injury.
- Ability to meet consistent attendance.
- Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Most of the work related to study participant interactions and handling data occurs remotely since the study involves sites across several states. In-person meetings with the study principal investigator, lab staff, recruitment activities, and professional presentations may be required. The employee will be provided with a laptop and cell phone that are specific to research activities to protect the privacy and confidentiality of participant information.
