What are the responsibilities and job description for the Family Services Caseworker position at Catholic Charities of Ashtabula County?

Catholic Charities of Ashtabula County is seeking a full-time position providing assessment, advocacy and case work for low and medium income households requesting basic needs assistance which includes housing, utility assistance, diapers/formula, prescription assistance, clothing, hygiene items and other supportive basic needs to assist individuals and/or families toward self-sufficiency.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following and other duties that are assigned:

  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals and/or families facing hardship and/or complex issues.
  • Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills along with strong time management and client file management skills.
  • Ability to problem solve client cases while utilizing internal and/external referral resources.
  • Ability to work with both short-term and long-term clients concurrently.
  • Engage in client advocacy needs with landlords, utility companies, other assistance programs and/or other consumer related partners.
  • Have the ability to work with grants/special funding and follow compliance and documentation guidelines.
  • Demonstrate commitment to strengths-based approaches to service delivery, principles of self-determination and person-centered planning.
  • Understand and respect individual diversity, economic and cultural choices, provide dignity and respect to all in need.
  • Able to discuss financial literacy topics focusing on budgeting household budget.
  • Be proficient with various technology applications including Excel, Word and electronic management databases.
  • Must be detail-oriented and well-organized with the ability to record case notes in a timely manner.
  • Efficient time management and organizational skills.
  • Able to adapt in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Become a HUD-certified caseworker within 6-months of hire.
  • Qualifications:
  • Exercise considerable judgement with a high level of confidentiality.
  • A high level of computer expertise in Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, including producing clear, concise reports.
  • Ability to balance multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Superior organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries and engagement skills with a challenging population.
  • Evidence of ongoing training and education in related areas such as financial, mental illness, substance abuse, and/or homelessness.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Associate’s degree in Social Work preferred, and/or two years’ experience in related field. Bilingual is a plus.

Certificates and Registration:

  • Successful completion of BCI/FBI background screening.
  • Successful completion of Exclusion Checks.

Reports To: Alice Harden, Family Services Program Manager

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $14.00 - $17.00 per hour

Expected hours: 37.5 per week
