Cayuga Nation Police Officer/ Tribal

The Cayuga Nation Police Department is a tribal police agency that is sworn to protect Cayuga Nation citizens, Nation owned properties, customers, and visitors. The patrol area is 64,015 acres in Cayuga and Seneca Counties in the Finger lakes Region of Central New York State.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • None.

Duties/ Responsibilities:

  • Patrols and protects Cayuga Nation owned properties and Nation citizens.
  • Analyzes statements and evidence to understand how and why a crime occurred and to identify possible perpetrators.
  • Assists with arrests, raids, and similar police activities.
  • Communicates with victims and other concerned parties regarding case status and progress.
  • Collaborates with prosecution to prepare for court appearances; testifies in court regarding means and methods used in investigation.
  • Safeguards evidence from contamination.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including strong interview and interrogation skills.
  • Thorough understanding of police and investigative procedures, processes, and techniques.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.
  • Extensive knowledge of criminal law and procedure.
  • Ability to correctly and safely handle and operate weapons and police equipment.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Proficient with or the ability to quickly learn investigative tools, applications, and software. Must be able to pass a psychological test.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screening.
  • Must be able to pass an extensive background investigation.
  • Must be a current or formerly certified tribal, local, or state police officer/ federal 1811 law enforcement officer.


Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree in political science, Public Administration, or related field preferred.
  • Graduation from police academy required.
  • At least three years of police force experience required.
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record required.


Physical Requirements:
  • This job is inherently dangerous and presents substantial risk to life and limb.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer, and walking, bending, and climbing at crime scenes.
  • May require periods of running or extremely heavy lifting to apprehend suspects or assist victims.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time.
  • Must be able to perform duties in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Must be able to pass a physical fitness test.


Hours per week:

  • Full time: 40 hours


Job Type:

  • Full-time


Salary:

  • $66,000 per year, with annual steps resulting in a base pay of $77,000 after 4 years
