Under the general direction of the Warden, the Office Technician provides clerical support to the Litigation Coordinator. This position requires the ability to work independently, managing time and meeting deadlines with minimal supervision. The clerical assigned to this position must be able to perform a variety of the most difficult duties and is expected to consistently exercise a high degree of initiative, independence and originality in performing assigned tasks. It is necessary to be confidential in dealing with sensitive, detailed information provided to this office in order to maintain the integrity of the Litigation’s Office. Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
Type and transcribe sensitive and confidential documents, policies and procedures and correspondence dealing with the inmate population, or staff to the Attorney General’s Office, federal, state and local courts, Headquarters, Warden’s Office and the Chief Deputy Warden. Typing interrogatories, admissions and legal briefs.
Research and compile information for inmate litigation cases, including examining inmate C-Files and ordering C-Files from archives when necessary. Photocopying of documents and office file material, summons, complaints and other documents requested by the Attorney General’s Office, plaintiff’s attorneys, involved parties and the institution.
Maintain office equipment, litigation files, computer litigation log ordering of supplies and follow-up on all incoming service documents from staff and inmates.

San Quentin State Prison is California’s oldest and best-known correctional institution, which was established on the site currently known as Point San Quentin, in July of 1852, as an answer to the rampant lawlessness in California at the time. The prison rests overlooking the bay on 432 acres and is located just 12 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge in the county of Marin. The walled prison is made up of four (4) large cell blocks (West, South, North, and East Block), one (1) maximum security cell block (the Adjustment Center), Central Health Care Service Building, a medium security dorm setting and a minimum-security firehouse.
Special Requirements
- The position(s) require(s) the ability to type at a minimum speed as designated on the Class Specifications (link available in the additional documentation section). You must obtain a valid typing certificate confirming your ability to meet the minimum typing speed, prior to being hired. Additional information regarding acceptable typing tests is available at the CalCareers.ca.gov website.
**Possession of Minimum Qualifications will be verified prior to interview and/or appointment. If you are meeting Minimum Qualifications with education, you must include your unofficial transcripts/diploma for verification. Official transcripts may be required upon appointment. If it is determined an applicant does not meet the Minimum Qualifications, the candidate will be withheld from the eligibility list, rendering them inactive and ineligible to be hired for the position. Candidates who have been withheld may file an appeal with the State Personnel Board.
**Candidates new to CDCR are required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan Fingerprinting, and Tuberculosis testing prior to appointment followed by department annual Tuberculosis testing/evaluation thereafter.
