Responsibilities:
The Assistant Director of Fitness is responsible for the staff, budget management, and program planning for fitness and wellbeing. They will manage personal training, group fitness classes, F45, massage therapy, and other fitness/wellbeing focused events or services. Additionally, this position will supervise the Coordinator, Adventure Recreation and provide general direction to this program area. This position will periodically serve on committees for UAB and/or CENTERS.
Core Responsibilities:
- Oversee and develop a comprehensive wellness program in line with the goals of the university and department
- Supervise the Coordinator of Adventure Recreation and Graduate Assistant of Fitness
- Contribute to revenue generating goals of the department through fitness program and service sales
- Recruit, hire, train, schedule and actively mentor student and part-time staff in area of responsibility
- Provide managerial and leadership experiences in program operations and create and promote professional development opportunities
- Develop and implement continuing education and training for fitness and wellness staff
- Assist in the coordination of purchasing, inventory, and maintenance of fitness equipment as needed
- Assist in managing all fitness equipment procurement and inventory depreciation schedules
- Assist with other duties as assigned
Administrative Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the operating, preparation, forecasting and monitoring of income and expense budgets for the fitness and wellness area
- Develop and revise administrative policies and procedures within the areas of responsibility
- Assess effectiveness and satisfaction of programs, services and facilities; track program participation
- Prepare regular written communication reports
- Create, encourage, and support professional development opportunities for staff, including professional association involvement, training programs, and individual mentoring
- Build strong partnerships on campus and with vendors
Site Specific Responsibilities:
- Schedule and/or instruct fitness and personal training certification workshops through national organizations
- Manage and inventory fitness and personal training equipment and supplies
- Work with the Coordinator, Engagement and Belonging on program area marketing needs and requests
- Work with the Facilities and Operations team on facility scheduling and fitness space operations
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or 6 years of work experience required; Master’s preferred
- At least two years of fitness programming experience preferred
- Experience working in a collegiate/community recreation environment, strong communication and presentation skills
- Previous experience in personal training or teaching group fitness classes preferred
- Knowledge of standard practices and demonstrated experience in recreational sports
- Leadership and supervisory abilities

- Current group fitness instructor certification (or willing to obtain)
