What are the responsibilities and job description for the Dog Training Coordinator position at Central Bark of Rochester?

Summary: Responsible for training dogs as part of Central Bark’s Group Classes, Training Tutor, and One-on-One Enrichment service offerings. We operate 365 days a year; employees are expected to work weekends and evenings in all types of weather. Approximately 50% of your time will be standing on your feet running group classes and/or training individual dogs. 20% will be administrative including fielding enrollments, scheduling, taking payments, and various reporting. 20% will be spent on general cleaning of the training facility areas and equipment. 10% will be spent interacting with parents, including before and after classes, to promote other Central Bark services including Enrichment Day Care, Sleepover, Stay & Play, Grooming, and suggesting high-quality training tools and supplies available for purchase in the Market area.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following (other duties may be assigned):
- Training dogs and enriching dogs’ lives according to the latest science-based dog behavior and training knowledge to further our mission of providing Whole Dog Care and Enrichment to every dog and family we serve.
- Staying up to date on dog behavior and training topics through continuing education over time.
- Using force-free, reward-based training methods at all times. Aversive methods may not be used.
- Training and enriching the lives of dogs and people in both individual and group settings.
- Responsible for educating staff on dog training best practices to be implemented by the entire Central Bark team.
- Duties and responsibilities may include training dogs on various cues and behaviors, working on group play skills to increase safety (individually and in a playgroup setting during Enrichment Day Care), engaging in enrichment activities, playing with dogs, and providing basic care such as brushing, petting, holding, crating, leashing, collaring, clothing (when jackets are needed), applying first aid, feeding, medicating, cleaning up after dogs, etc.
- Maintaining a clean and safe environment for dogs and people at all times. These duties may include but are not limited to cleaning up dog waste, sweeping, mopping, dusting, disinfecting, cleaning crates, etc.
- Is directly responsible for providing and documenting the appropriate information about individual dogs and clients under their care including enrollments, payments, scheduling, and sending training report cards to owners.
- Working as a team member with fellow employees and management to provide the highest quality experience for both the dogs and people in their care.
- Ensuring customer satisfaction is consistently obtained.
- Helping to support the efficient and effective operation of the facility.
- Helping to maintain the highest company standards in the delivery of all services.
- Is responsible for other administrative or various duties related to the position as assigned by management.
- Is responsible for reading and knowing all Company Policies and Procedures.

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Education and/or Experience: Candidates with pet dog training certifications & education including CPDT, KPA, or other accredited programs & certificates preferred. Previous experience working with dogs and people in a professional setting is preferred. Training sessions and seminars may be scheduled during non-working hours where your attendance may be required.

Physical Skills: Ability to perform a variety of demanding physical activities, including lifting a minimum of 50 pounds (whether it is a bag of dog food, a crate, or a dog), standing for long periods, and enduring extreme outdoor temperatures. Grasping, pinching, and pulling skills are also needed to leash and collar dogs and to navigate them through spaces.

Health: It is required that all employees are current on their Tetanus vaccination.

Language Skills. Ability to read dog information including names, medication, and feeding instructions, schedules, etc. Be able to communicate dog issues with management either via written or oral communication.

Computer Skills: A basic understanding of Windows-based applications is helpful.

Reasoning Ability: An ability to define problems, analyze emergencies, and think on your feet. Many dogs enrolled in training classes may present behavioral challenges that need to be worked through using only reward-based methods. It is the employees’ job to critically think through these challenges to keep dogs and people safe during individual and group training classes. Reading a dog’s body language and behavior and catching key indicators of possible conflict is a must to ensure the safety and well-being of both dogs and people

Compensation:
- 50% of all group training fees for classes led by trainer.  Classes can be held during business hours (weather permitting), after working hours, or weekends, depending on trainer preferences
- 100% of tips of group training classes
- 25% of all 1:1 Training Tutor Fees sold by the entire store (not just individually performed Training Tutor Sessions)
- $20/hour for any regular store duties not related to Dog Training responsibilities
- Benefits to be considered within 6-12 months after store opening.
