Purpose and Overview

Central Presbyterian Church, in Towson, MD, is a Christ-centered community of about 400 members, comprising all ages and faith stages, focused on our mission of “moving people toward Christ by being a community of faith which loves, encourages and equips people in Christ, sending them out to serve.” Located in a thriving area, Central is poised for impact and outreach in our community and beyond. While we embrace our Presbyterian identity, Central encompasses believers from a variety of backgrounds, and remains anchored in the historic tenets of orthodox Christian belief.

We seek a Director of Worship Arts who embraces the gospel of Jesus Christ, who embodies the call to worship in life and practice, and who brings musical excellence and prayerful intentionality to the process of planning and leading Spirit-filled corporate worship for the church.

Accountability

  • Full-time position (salary range $60,000-$70,000), with benefits package
  • Directly accountable to the Senior Pastor
  • Direct Reports: paid and volunteer worship production team members, other Worship staff, volunteer contemporary worship team members

Duties and Responsibilities

Aligning with Vision:

  • With the Senior Pastor, ensure the worship services at Central align with the overarching vision set by Central’s leadership and the Session
  • With the Senior Pastor, set the direction of contemporary worship

Planning and Design:

  • Plan purposefully, always with a focus on who God is and what he has done
  • Plan hospitably, with a focus on meaningful connection (with God and with each other) for regular attendees and guests
  • Support each sermon series by overseeing song selection, lighting, graphics and backgrounds, and creative elements

Coordination and Communication:

  • Participate in on-campus weekly worship planning meetings and bi-weekly staff meetings
  • Communicate the details of sermon series and weekly services with worship leaders and the worship team as needed
  • Guide and/or conduct rehearsals for contemporary worship team
  • Collaborate with the Director of Traditional Worship to ensure thematic and creative cohesion across worship environments
  • Offer support and guidance to Traditional Worship staff as needed
  • Collaborate with key volunteers to create series-wide artistic elements that add value and increase engagement in worship, through drama, scripture story-telling, visual arts, etc.

Administrative responsibilities:

  • Oversee schedule for the contemporary worship and production teams
  • Update Planning Center (sermon series, personnel, song repertoire)
  • Oversee and maintain contemporary worship operating budget
  • Ensure compliance with copyright and legal requirements

Sunday Worship Services:

  • Direct and produce Sunday morning contemporary worship service
  • Support Traditional Worship service as needed
  • Provide oversight for the worship production team
  • Participate regularly in contemporary worship services, both through leading worship and by overseeing production team
  • Ensure program quality during Sunday morning services, for in person as well as online congregation members and guests

Special Services

  • Help envision and plan annual special services as needed:

-Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, Christmas Mourning Service, Christmas Eve family service, Christmas Eve contemporary service

-Work with the Traditional Worship Director to plan 3-4 joint Sunday morning services per year.

Team Development - spiritual, communal, musical

  • Organize occasional gatherings for contemporary worship leaders and/or contemporary worship team to facilitate discussion about worship, theology, etc.
  • Organize occasional music training events for the team or portions of the team (vocal training event, etc.)
  • Help to develop Central’s volunteer worship leaders through proactive conversations during the planning process and/or follow-up conversations after service leadership
  • Recruit, audition, and onboard new musicians and leaders as needed
  • Recognize church members with artistic and creative abilities outside the “normal” Sunday morning instrumentation and creatively facilitate opportunities for them to use their gifts (visual art, dance, other musical instruments, drama, etc.)

Required Skills

  • Highly motivated and organized with a passion for intergenerational ministry
  • Appreciation and experience in both contemporary and traditional worship
  • Strong communication skills (oral and written)
  • Collaborative team player with strong leadership abilities
  • Ability to assess congregation needs and to guide them in their faith journey
  • Supervision and personnel management experience
  • Basic knowledge of worship technology and equipment; Working knowledge of Propresenter and Planning Center helpful; Audio tech experience beneficial
  • Budget management skills

Qualifications

  • Five years in contemporary worship leadership in a large church
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Experience and aptitude in leading worship through music, prayer, and thoughtful verbal transitions
  • Experience with intergenerational worship
