Position Overview:
Chadwick School seeks an experienced and passionate Director and Instructor to lead its transformative Marine Explorers Intensive program. This two-week experiential program immerses high school students in hands-on marine science, SCUBA certification, ocean research, and real-world environmental conservation. The ideal candidate is a dynamic educator with a strong background in marine science, ocean education, and outdoor experiential learning, and a proven ability to inspire and mentor youth.
Key Responsibilities:
- Program Leadership:
- Design and oversee the implementation of the Marine Explorers Intensive curriculum, ensuring alignment with program goals and student learning outcomes.
- Manage program logistics, including scheduling, safety protocols, and collaboration with partner organizations like AltaSea and Catalina Island Marine Institute.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for students, families, and external stakeholders.
- Instruction and Facilitation:
- Lead engaging, hands-on lessons and workshops in marine science, SCUBA skills, and ocean conservation.
- Provide mentorship to students as they engage in underwater surveys, biodiversity research, and sustainability projects.
- Guide students through earning their SCUBA certification, including pool and open-water training.
- Collaboration and Coordination:
- Partner with leading scientists, environmental organizations, and conservation specialists to deliver impactful research opportunities.
- Work closely with Chadwick faculty, staff, and external instructors to ensure seamless program delivery.
- Coordinate field experiences on Catalina Island, including underwater exploration of kelp forests and other habitats.
- Safety and Compliance:
- Uphold the highest standards of safety for all SCUBA and field activities, ensuring adherence to industry best practices.
- Maintain current certifications in First Aid, CPR, and SCUBA.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education, experience and skill requirements
Qualifications:
- Education and Expertise:
- Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in Marine Science, Biology, Environmental Education, or equivalent experience.
- Extensive knowledge of marine ecosystems, biodiversity, and ocean conservation.
- Strong background in teaching outdoor, experiential, and immersive education programs.
- SCUBA and Ocean Experience:
- Certified SCUBA diver with open-water diving experience.
- Familiarity with underwater research methods, survey techniques, and marine fieldwork.
- Teaching and Leadership:
- Proven experience teaching high school or college students in outdoor and field-based settings.
- Exceptional leadership and interpersonal skills, with a talent for inspiring and engaging youth.
- Ability to manage program logistics and work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
- Additional Requirements:
- Strong commitment to ocean conservation and environmental education.
- Current First Aid, CPR, and SCUBA certification.
- Willingness to travel and work flexible hours during the program.
Compensation:
Chadwick School offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience and a benefits package.
Compensation based on experience and highest degree earned. College degree starts at $35.50
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
- Walking and being outdoors for somewhat extended periods of time on a regular basis is part of the job as the school sits on 45 acres of land
- Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and an ability to adjust focus.
- Will use telephone, computer, copier, and other office equipment in the course of a day.
