What are the responsibilities and job description for the Horticulturist position at Chambers Bay Golf Course?
POSITION SUMMARY
The Horticulturist oversees the landscape operations at Chambers Bay Grounds by maintaining, preserving and improving the ornamental and naturalized landscapes throughout the site-property.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES -include the following. (Other duties may be assigned.)
- Observes safety regulations, uses appropriate personal protective equipment and performs all work in a safe manner. Ensures proper care in the safe use and maintenance of all vehicles, tools and equipment used.
- Operate small power equipment and attachments such as string trimmers, hedge shears, leaf blowers, etc.
- Operate equipment for hauling soil, leaves, plants, wood and other items.
- Remove litter and debris from grounds.
- Assist with the maintenance, preservation and improvement of grounds to include installing and maintaining basic grounds landscape plantings, pruning, mulching and weeding.
- Planting of plant material such as groundcover, shrubs, flowers.
- May be required to carry a two-way radio.
- Evaluate existing landscape presentations and make recommendations for improvement based on aesthetic and horticultural knowledge.
- Monitor clubhouse grounds and landscape beds throughout for overall plant health and watering requirements.
- Develop IPM programs and be responsible for applications of pesticides and fertility treatments for ornamentals, and flowers.
- Develop pruning plan that enhances the health and aesthetics of the landscape throughout the property.
- Purchase and maintain nursery stock.
- Maintain accurate records of horticultural fertilizer and pesticides applications and plant material.
- Communicate (both verbally and in writing) with all levels of the organization while also exercising good judgement and effective decision making based on accurate and timely analysis.
- Must be able to maintain a flexible work schedule with the ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
- Serve as a knowledge expert for their team by identifying specific plant care needs and strategies for the team’s assigned areas.
QUALIFICATIONS -The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Must poses the physical dexterity and stamina required for grounds and landscape maintenance duties.
· Must possess a valid driver’s license and a clean MVR record.
· Ability to successfully pass a drug screening.
· Criminal background check will be performed.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS -Special consideration will be given to applicants with extensive grounds maintenance background, horticultural experience, equipment operation and pesticide knowledge. Demonstrated knowledge of automatic irrigation systems, IPM, and pruning practices.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS PREFERRED
- Bachelor's Degree In Horticulture (or related field, such as landscape architecture) with minimum of 3 years’ experience in the field or Associate Degree with 5 years of field experience.
- Have or obtain a Washington State Pesticide Applicators License in Turf and Ornamentals.
- Have a Master Gardeners Certification.

Pay: $21.00 - $24.00 per hour
