Performs technical work in entomological surveys and mosquito control programs. Work involves responsibility for assisting other laboratory personnel in performing detailed and routine tasks associated with mosquito control programs. Work is performed according to detailed scientific procedures and includes the documentation of experimental data and test results. Work involves the exercise of some initiative and judgment including the ability to work for long periods of time in field surveillance outside the office without immediate supervision.This position is Monday-Friday 7am - 3:30pm.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collects samples using specialized laboratory equipment; analyzes various samples to determine composition or characteristics of mosquitoes and parameters as required by an established sampling schedule.
- Performs land rate surveys and other biological surveys; conducts light trap surveillance by maintaining setting and collecting Centers for Disease Control mosquito traps.
- Cleans and operates standard laboratory equipment including Bunsen burner, assorted glassware, thermometers, centrifuge, balances and scales, stands, clamps and other containers or instruments.
- Performs basic mathematical and algebraic calculations.
- Performs basic administrative duties including written reports, memorandums, letters, and electronic correspondence, interaction with others, and communication through telephone and meetings.
Minimum Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent.
Licenses and/or Certificates: Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Florida driver's license.
- Knowledge of modern laboratory techniques and procedures.
- Knowledge of proper sampling methods to obtain a representative sample and accurate test results.
- Knowledge of the proper use of laboratory glassware and apparatus.
- Knowledge of biological principles and theory.
- Ability to apply biological and mathematical theory to solve practical problems in scientific analysis and laboratory testing.
- Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in interpreting and enforcing department codes, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Ability to make recommendations and to use resourcefulness and tact in solving new problems.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; ability to maintain accurate records and reports.
- Ability to operate a 4x4 vehicle.
