The Research and Development Scientist position is in the Chemistry Development and Fundamentals (CDF) team of Chevron Oronite Company, located at the Richmond Technology Center in California.  Oronite invents, manufactures, and sells performance-enhancing additives for lubricants and fuels, and the CDF team engages in developing next generation components and supporting fundamentals from concept to commercialization that will give Oronite, Chevron and its customers a competitive advantage in additive packages, finished lubricants and fuels.

This Research Scientist position will serve as our group's specialist in tribology.

Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:

  • Performance testing of new lubricant additives particularly in the areas of friction and wear
  • Design of new test methods and procedures to simulate lubricant operational conditions to be able to predict actual engine and equipment performance.
  • Develop fundamental understandings of lubrication problems as related to friction and wear in order to provide formulating or new chemistry development recommendations to overcome these problems
  • Work collaboratively with other synthetic chemists, process development engineers, additive formulators, intellectual property and business functions to provide support in understanding and solving performance gaps.
  • Follow processes which ensure that work is conducted in the safest and most environmentally sound manner
  • Perform literature and patent searches in support of research; write comprehensive research reports; give oral presentations of work. Potential to present technical work at conferences and professional meetings.
  • Develop and lead a research strategy to address customer performance and business needs.
  • Ability to manage and work on multiple projects concurrently.
  • Create intellectual property through invention disclosures, patent applications, and publications
  • Provide work direction to one or more laboratory assistants and ensure safe, incident-free operations.

Required Qualifications:

  • Completed PhD degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineer, or other related science with an emphasis in tribology is preferred or a similar Master's degree with relevant research experience.
  • Competency in safe laboratory protocols, and prudent laboratory practices
  • Demonstrated experience in research with a high level of technical competency in developing new test protocols
  • Demonstrated record of innovation and success in understanding and solving complex problems, and applying fundamental understanding to the solution of practical problems
  • Demonstrated prioritization, organization, attention to detail and multi-tasking skills
  • Demonstrated excellent communication skills in face-to-face meetings, presentations, written and verbal correspondence, written research reports, and published reports or articles
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interface/consult/collaborate with technical professionals and service providers and demonstrated skills in partnership, leadership, and teamwork in accordance with Chevron’s standard of high ethical, professional, and safe behaviors
  • Demonstrated ability in leading technical project teams

  • The anticipated salary range for this position is $112,200 – $221,900. The selected candidate’s compensation will be determined based on their skills, experience, and qualifications.
