JOB DESCRIPTION -

Job Summary:

The Office of Inspector General (OIG) is the independent oversight body for Chicago’s approximately 650 public, contract and charter schools. The Office's Sexual Allegations Unit investigates allegations of sexual misconduct by a CPS-affiliated adult, including employees, contractors, vendors and charter schools, where the victim is a CPS student and/or a minor.


Under direction of the Inspector General, the Assistant Inspector General in the Sexual Allegations Unit will provide legal counsel and support to the OIG’s Sexual Allegations Unit, which investigates cases involving sexual abuse or sexual harassment of CPS students.


The Assistant Inspector General will be held accountable for the following responsibilities:

  • Provide legal counsel, support, and guidance on topics including but not limited to, the OIG’s jurisdiction, search and seizure and other constitutional issues, labor and employment, interpretation and enforcement of statutes and ordinances, Title IX, and investigations in the Sexual Allegations Unit
  • Write and edit investigative summary reports, which are sent to the Chicago Board of Education
  • Advise on strategic and legal investigative matters, including investigative techniques and the strength of evidence obtained
  • Perform legal research and write and edit legal memoranda on issues related to investigations
  • Work with outside law enforcement entities as appropriate
  • Prepare subpoenas and other documents for administrative and criminal actions
  • Provide training on legal issues as requested by the Inspector General
  • Closely coordinate with CPS’s Law, Safety and Security, and Student Protections/Title IX Offices, other departments, and external agencies to ensure student safety and facilitate the delivery of trauma and/or social-emotional services to students, families and staff
  • Perform additional ad hoc duties as assigned

In order to be successful and achieve the above responsibilities, the Assistant Inspector General must possess the following qualifications:

Education Required:

  • Juris Doctorate from an ABA accredited law school
  • Admission to the Bar, Illinois Bar preferred

Experience Required:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of work experience in the public or private sector conducting investigations
  • Previous experience investigating sexual misconduct, particularly child sexual abuse or sexual harassment, and performing field work, such as interviews of children and/or victims of sexual abuse, sexual harassment, or trauma for positions in the Sexual Allegations Unit is preferred

Other Requirements:

  • A valid driver’s license is required
  • Flexible availability required including during non-operating hours

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Refined judgment with the ability to manage highly sensitive and confidential information
  • Skills in the areas of conflict resolution, problem solving techniques, interviewing, and investigation
  • Analytical and critical thinking skills demonstrated by the ability to analyze information and facilitate resolution of difficult challenges, including the ability to handle issues of complex and extreme sensitivity
  • Ability to write concise, logical and analytical reports to convey complex issues
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple deadlines and work independently while maintaining high levels of organization
  • Interpersonal skills and the ability to work with diverse constituents, including children, parents, faculty, staff and law enforcement

Conditions of Employment

As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to:

  • Establish/Maintain Chicago Residency - Employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date and maintain residency throughout their employment with the district. The Chicago residency requirement does not apply to temporary/part-time positions, however, all CPS employees must be residents of Illinois.
  • Be Fully Vaccinated Against COVID-19 - Unless approved for a medical or religious exemption, all employees are required to be up-to-date on COVID-19 vaccinations, including boosters, and to submit proof of vaccination to the district within 30 days of hire. “Up-to-date” on vaccination is defined as being at least two weeks past all primary vaccine doses and any applicable boosters.

Salary : $87,000 - $115,500
