Pre Press Technician
Summary
The Pre-Press Technician is the first step in the process of production. This position works closely with the graphic artist and manager. Perform duties to make printing plates, prepare and check layouts and requisitions, assemble shop order instructions, check printer proofs and approve for production runs, maintain records and perform similar duties to assist in maintaining production schedules
Responsibilities:
- Work from specifications, customer orders, samples, schedules and instructions.
- Transfer a wide variety of negative image onto a broad range of photosensitive printing plates.
- Expose film and plates to artificial light for specified time, process exposed plates from washing to remove foreign matter and mix necessary chemical solutions through drying and finishing operations.
- File plates for future use.
- Check printer’s proofs for accuracy and appearance, indicate errors, approve acceptable work for production run and maintain specifications and quality standards.
- Type and maintain records and files and produce filed material as requested.
- Diligently notify supervisor of unusual equipment or operating problems.
- Prepare job layouts, calculate and positions copy material, accumulate data and instructions and distribute shop orders according to schedule.
- Maintain equipment.
- Assist with the following as needed:
- Review job tickets to determine various component units, material and tools, and preparation required for press production run.
- Pull print cylinder and fan folder gears as specified.
- Install proper size perforator wheel in perforating holder
- Notify supervisor of low stock items.
- Perform plate and die testing
- Future Development:
- Train to become Electronic Graphics back-up.
- Learn software and skills which enable the output of customer proofs and negative files.
- Prepare job layouts, calculate and positions copy material, accumulate data and instructions and distribute shop orders according to schedule.
- Follow safety rules and keep the work area in a clean and orderly condition.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- High School Diploma required
- Minimum 6 months equivalent education or experience working in manufacturing environment.
- Strong interest in photography or graphic arts
- Must have attention to detail (quality of work is imperative)
- Excellent math, ruler, written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to differentiate color and visually inspect products as they are manufactured
- Ability to lift 25 lbs. several times a day; and 40 lbs. on an occasional basis daily
- Mechanical inclination: Experience with and ability to work efficiently with hand tools and measuring instruments
- Ability to use a calculator, computer, gauges and light box
- Ability to work standing and walking
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and cooperatively with other departments
