Job Description

Involves a combination of supervised, progressively more complex and independent patient evaluation and management functions and formal educational activities. Competency in each clinical domain will be assessed on a regular basis by the NCOPE Residency Director. American Board Certified clinical staff in the Orthotics and Prosthetics department have overall responsibility for the quality of professional services provided to patients within Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and will monitor activity of the resident through direct and indirect supervision in accordance with ABC Scope of Practice. This is a one year position.

Experience

  • Successful completion of clinical rotations as part of educational program

Preferred Qualifications

  • Clinical rotations in pediatric settings

Education

  • Master’s Degree in Orthotics and Prosthetics

Certification Summary

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days of employment

  • Reliable transportation to travel between assigned locations
  • Ability to communicate and interact professionally and effectively with patients/parents, physicians, and interdisciplinary colleagues

Job Responsibilities

  • Provides supervised comprehensive orthotic and/or prosthetic age-appropriate patient care for newborns to young adults for inpatients and outpatients at assigned orthotics and prosthetics locations, including thorough assessment, formulation of a detailed treatment plan, achievement of accurate measurements/impression, device/component/material design, evaluation of fit and function of prescribed devices, and patient education.
  • Care will be supervised directly or indirectly as defined by supervisory guidelines by an American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics certified and Georgia licensed orthotist.
  • Initial treatments will be directly supervised with decreasing levels of supervision as resident is deemed competent in each clinical area per National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education standards.
  • Performs follow-up care, including assessment of fit and function and adjustment to device and/or treatment plan when necessary.
  • Communicates changes with physician/referral source and other members of patient’s treatment team.
  • Demonstrates thorough, accurate, and timely clinical, technical, and financial documentation, including ordering according to departmental policies.
  • Reviews all treatment plans and fabrication work orders with clinical preceptor prior to submission and ensures chart notes are co-signed by clinical preceptor.
  • Fabricates and repairs prescribed devices with technical instruction and supervision as needed.
  • Selects appropriate materials and components based on patient criteria to ensure optimum strength, durability, and function.
  • Tracks patient device status and locations for delivery.
  • Fabricates, delivers, and follows up with devices initiated as much as feasible.
  • Communicates with mentors and residency director the status of devices in progress.
  • Seeks and initiates learning opportunities through colleagues, physicians, interdisciplinary healthcare providers, manufacturers, and educational symposiums.
  • Attends all Orthotics and Prosthetics department clinical meetings and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta educational programs and meetings as assigned by residency director.
  • Fulfills all requirements of National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education residency program, including completion of approved directed study.
  • Abides by policies and procedures of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and Orthotics and Prosthetics department as well as American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics code of ethics.
  • Promotes a safe and professional environment for patient care through Joint Commission readiness and applying American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics facility accreditation standards.
