Job Summary
Under the general supervision of the Lead, Chief, Supervisor, and/or Manager: process laboratory specimens, perform data entry, transport specimens, prepare reagents, prepare specimen batches for instrumentation, maintain equipment, and manage laboratory supplies. Must be a self-sufficient, independent worker; skilled problem-solver; and a CHOP ICARE and Service Standard champion.
Job Responsibilities
Specimen Processing
- Assess specimen acceptability and integrity to meet laboratory requirements for testing
- Triage, accession, process, and route specimens following established procedures
- Store specimens according to laboratory-specific storage directives as needed
- Retrieve stored specimens for additional processing as needed
Customer Service
- Face-to-face

- Interfacing with laboratory staff, medical staff, medical courier, and vendors

- Maintain and clean medical laboratory equipment

- Assists in monitoring of inventory control

- Unpacking and restocking
Limited messenger service as required
- Promptly delivers specimens or paperwork throughout the health care campus as required.
- Promptly activates and executes the pneumatic tube downtime procedures as required
- Is knowledgeable in the use of resources to identify transport temperatures for all specimens and ensure stability

Required Education and Experience
Required Education:
- HS Diploma/GED
- Current enrollment in a bachelor’s degree of Medical Laboratory Science or related science program
Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic
Additional Technical Requirements
- Training and competence in advanced Phlebotomy and/or Central Lab procedures
- Staff training
- Able to work within in a project team environment
- Knowledge: basic biology, basic chemistry, English language, customer service, public safety and security

To carry out its mission, it is of critical importance for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) to keep our patients, families and workforce safe and healthy and to support the health of our global community. In keeping with this, CHOP has mandated all workforce members on site at any CHOP location for any portion of their time be vaccinated for COVID-19 as a condition of employment. This mandate also applies to workforce members performing work for CHOP at non-CHOP locations. Additionally, all workforce members based in or regularly scheduled to work at any New Jersey location are mandated to be both vaccinated and boosted for COVID-19, with booster timing consistent with applicable guidelines. The CHOP COVID-19 vaccine mandate is in alignment with applicable local, state and federal mandates. CHOP also requires all workforce members who work in patient care buildings or who provide patient care to receive an annual influenza vaccine. Employees may request exemption consideration for CHOP vaccine requirements for valid religious and medical reasons. Please note start dates may be delayed until candidates are fully immunized or valid exemption requests are reviewed.
