About this Position

ChristianaCare is searching for Manager, Materials Management to ensure that all medical equipment within the Equipment Room facility is safe, functional, and readily available for use. This position will act as the principal point of contact for all equipment-related matters, encompassing procurement, utilization, and disposal. This Manager will also be responsible for maintaining comprehensive records of customer support and staff development initiatives, as well as providing educational opportunities. Furthermore, this role requires the ability to lead a diverse team in achieving the department's and the overall system's goals and objectives.

Principal duties and responsibilities:

Strategic Planning & Procurement:

  • This involves forecasting equipment needs, researching new technologies, managing vendor relationships, negotiating contracts, and making informed purchasing decisions to acquire new medical devices and systems. They ensure equipment aligns with hospital standards, patient care needs, and budget constraints.

Inventory & Asset Management:

  • They maintain a comprehensive, accurate inventory of all hospital equipment, including its location, status, service history, and depreciation. This function is critical for tracking assets, planning for replacements, and optimizing equipment utilization across departments.

Maintenance & Calibration Oversight:

  • A key responsibility is establishing and managing robust preventative maintenance (PM), which includes working with Clinical Engineering on potential schedules and calibration programs for all equipment to ensure its accuracy, safety, and longevity. They also coordinate and oversee corrective maintenance, often working closely with biomedical engineers, technicians, and external service providers to minimize downtime.

Regulatory Compliance & Safety:

  • Ensuring all medical devices comply with local, national, and international regulatory standards (e.g., FDA, Joint Commission, OSHA). They are responsible for implementing safety protocols, managing equipment recalls and alerts, and contributing to risk management initiatives to protect both patients and staff.

Budget Management:

  • They develop and manage the operational and capital budgets related to equipment acquisition, maintenance, repair, and eventual disposal. This includes cost analysis, identifying opportunities for savings, and justifying expenditures to hospital administration.
  • Timekeeping

Staff Training & Support:

  • They play a vital role in coordinating and sometimes delivering training for clinical staff on the proper and safe operation of medical equipment. They also provide technical support and guidance, troubleshooting issues, and advising on best practices for equipment use.

Disposal & Lifecycle Management:

  • Managing the entire lifecycle of equipment, from initial acquisition through to safe and compliant disposal. This includes assessing equipment for end-of-life, coordinating decommissioning, and ensuring environmentally responsible and secure disposal methods are followed.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor Degree or equivalent related experience
  • Three to Five years in Equipment Management preferably in a hospital/medical setting
  • Five years of inventory management, three of which must have been in a supervisory capacity
