What you’ll be doing:
Effectively analyze insurance submissions, recognize exposures, provide coverage alternatives, offer risk management suggestions, and adequately price insurance coverage on risks of a complex technical nature within the company underwriting guidelines. Achieve production and loss ratio goals within assigned territory by reviewing and analyzing claims and loss history and taking appropriate action on individual accounts and/or program or territory. Develop appropriate processing systems and operating procedures for the Broker/Specialty Markets division accounts. Understand insurance issues, products, trends in the market, religions, and rating/pricing principles. Responsible for determining appropriate reinsurance placement, if any, on individual accounts. Foster positive business relationships and be a resource for sales staff, brokers, and agents.
On any given day, you’ll:
- Within established binding authority, effectively work with brokers and agents to write and retain as much quality business as possible, at a profit, while meeting company objectives and customers' coverage and service needs. Effectively analyze insurance submissions, recognize exposures, provide coverage alternatives, offer risk management suggestions, and adequately price insurance coverage.
- Determine which risks to accept and retain, how to insure them, and at what price with appropriate recommendations for risk management. Thoroughly understand the reinsurance function and calculations and administer reinsurance per company guidelines.
- Be knowledgeable of company processing systems and workflows and recommend new ideas or changes for improvements. Develop appropriate processing systems and operating procedures for special accounts.
- Provide exceptional service to our brokers, agents, customers, and internal staff through technical knowledge and expertise and support of the risk management function.
- Be a leader and resource for others and assist in the development and direction of personnel, products, and support systems.
- Travel to establish and maintain broker and agent relationships, gain technical knowledge, support the Broker/Specialty Markets Division, or complete special assignments.
Here’s what we expect
- Bachelor's degree is required. Associate in Underwriting designation or successful completion of two Chartered Property Casualty Underwriting (CPCU) courses may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- 7 years of experience with a property and casualty insurance company is required. A bachelor’s degree may waive a portion of the experience requirement.
- Ability and initiative to be self-directed.
- Recognize and be receptive to change opportunities to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
- Expertise of the underwriting function and insurance coverages and principles to handle complex insurance transactions, including reinsurance application and administration.
- Operate as a subject matter expert and leader for Commercial Underwriting.
- Demonstrated success in the ability to effectively identify and analyze exposures, recognize areas of concern, and develop appropriate solutions.
- Superior ability to make decisions outside parameter-based situations but within binding authority.
- Superior ability to explain decisions to others and negotiate appropriate solutions.
