Summary of Position:
This position is responsible for processing referrals to specialty care, completing prior authorizations, and coordinating logistics of specialty care on behalf of and with patients. This position is responsible to assist with the completion of patient registration, directing patients appropriately, facilitating communication between patients and the clinic staff, and providing clerical support for clinicians. The Health Unit Coordinator also maintains an updated referral list organized by insurance type, maintains relationships with referral partners, is aware of documentation requirements for specialty providers, and communicates referral relationship changes to providers.
Essential Duties:
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Welcomes guests by greeting patients and visitors, in person or on the telephone; answering or referring inquiries
- Optimizes patient’s satisfaction, provider time, and treatment room utilization by scheduling appointments in person or by telephone
- Request records as needed for referral coordination by assisting patient to complete appropriate forms and communicating with referral entity
- Schedule appointments with referral entity, communicate scheduled appointment dates to patient, schedule follow up care as ordered by provider
- Ensure pre-operative and referral paperwork is complete and received by specialty provider prior to specialist appointment
- Ensure referrals are addressed in a timely manner; maintain referral log to ensure referral loop is closed appropriately
- Contact the patient regarding any pending referrals, working to reduce or eliminate barriers as needed
- Collaborates with management throughout each shift to determine work assignments and priorities, as well as communicating the status of delegated task completion and outcome of patient data findings
- Maintains timely, ongoing verbal communication in order to assure good care of patients and the effective running of the clinic
- Keeps patient appointments on schedule by notifying provider of patients arrival; reviewing service delivery compared to schedule; reminding provider of service delays
- Comforts patients by anticipating patient’s anxieties; answering patients questions; maintaining the reception area
- Maintains patient accounts by obtaining, recording, and updating personal and financial information.
- Obtains revenue by recording and updating financial information; recording and collecting patient charges; filing collecting and expediting third party claims when appropriate
- Protects patient’s rights by maintaining confidentiality of personal and financial information
- Performs other duties as required
Qualifications
Qualifications:
Basic Knowledge and Skills:
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Detail oriented and ability to take direction
- High school diploma or equivalency
- Strong computer skills: MS Office Suite
- Effectively utilize electronic medical records
- Able to work with minimal supervision successfully
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred
Physical and Mental Requirements:
- Position requires extended periods of sitting and standing
- Position requires regular bending and reaching
- Able to adapt to rapid, unpredictable work flow
- Experience with the underserved population preferred
