STREET/STORM MAINTENANCE III
JOB SUMMARY
Under close supervision, performs a variety of skilled work in the construction, modification,
maintenance and repair of City streets, rights-of-way, and stormwater systems; operates hand and
power tools, trucks and heavy equipment in the performance of work; performs general labor work as
assigned.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
▪ Performs construction and maintenance work in public works areas including streets, sidewalks, storm water and drainage systems, street sweeping, and traffic signage.
▪ Operate various types and sizes of equipment proficiently: trucks and motorized equipment, dump trucks, tractors, skid loader, bobcat, backhoe, front loader, jackhammer, spreaders, air compressors, steel wheel roller, sign applicator, paint striping machine and crosswalk marking
machine, catch basin cleaner, power saws or any other small motor driven equipment; inspects vehicles and reports maintenance as required.
▪ Drives vehicles to work sites and sets up and removes barricades to protect crews from street traffic including lane closures; directs traffic in roadways to protect crews.
▪ Breaks and removes pavements; digs, shovels, hauls and loads soils, sand, gravel, cement, asphalt mixes and other materials, tools, and equipment; cleans up work sites upon completion of job.
▪ Sweeps and shovels debris and litter, carries cans and heavy objects and loads trucks; assists in emptying loads at dump sites.
▪ Work on street repairs and the following duties which may be required by hand or machine:
▪ Applying asphalt and chip or sealcoating materials
▪ Spreading aggregate, bituminous asphalt, and concrete materials
▪ Plowing snow and spreading ice control chemicals
▪ Ditching and site grading work
▪ Setting culverts to grade
▪ Concrete repairs and brick sidewalk /street repairs
▪ Installing signage according to traffic manual
▪ Measures and lays out center lines, crosswalks, and other line markings
▪ Builds and removes forms; mixes, sets, trowels and finishes concrete, cement, and masonry.
▪ Clean and maintain storm water systems and operate related equipment.
▪ Maintains records of work performed.
▪ Meets with and responds to inquiries and concerns from the public.
▪ Must be able to perform operator maintenance such as greasing u-joints, kingpins, and all required parts; check and monitor oil and fluid levels; and be able to fill out daily operator maintenance records for equipment used.
▪ May assist other areas in the removal and installation of street lighting poles and fixtures; maintaining, repairing and making alterations to buildings, facilities and equipment; assisting in the fabrication, assembly, and installation of traffic signs.
▪ Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
▪ High School graduate or GED.
▪ Must possess basic reading, writing and math skills as tested by the Civil Service Commission.

▪ Valid Illinois Driver License, Class “B”, CDL with an Air Brake and Tanker endorsement within one (1) year probationary period; Requires ability to operate vehicles skillfully and safely; observes safe driving practices.
▪ Subject to emergency call out, twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week.
▪ Two (2) years in routine street maintenance or related work.
▪ Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form. Ability to operate a computer, tablet, and related electronic devices with appropriate training.
▪ Ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees, contractors, vendors, and the general public.
▪ Comply with established safety standards and rules including the use of safety equipment, personal protective equipment and other devices and procedures necessary for protection.
▪ Responsible for use and care of equipment in the field.
