The Anaheim Police Department is seeking highly motivated individuals for the position of Corrections Officer /Police Reserve Level III. This position requires employees to work under moderate supervision, processing arrestees into and out of the City Detention Facility and perform tasks related to the custody, housing and feeding of arrestees, and perform other job-related duties as directed by the Police Department.
When assigned to perform duties as a Police Reserve Level III, employees may be required to transport arrestees/inmates to various facilities, hospitals, and locations. Employees are required to be armed during the transportation of arrestees/inmates.
NOTE: The City of Anaheim Detention Facility is a 24/7 operation and employees will be required to work a variety of shifts including, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays as assigned.The following functions are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed functions and/or may be required to perform additional or different functions from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
- Receives arrestees; conducts searches; inventories property; obtains critical health and mental information from arrestees; completes paper and computer bookings and all other related paperwork.
- Tags, seals, and secures inmate personal property.
- Fingerprints and photographs inmates using the Automated Fingerprint System.
- Assists inmates in completing their phone calls and houses inmates according to proper classification in the housing area of the Detention Facility.
- Releases inmates and their personal property when appropriate and in accordance with laws and regulations.
- Assists the Bailiff in processing inmates during the video arraignment court process.
- Conducts security checks of the Detention Facility both physically and via closed circuit television.
- Supervises Inmate Workers engaged in cleaning facility, preparing/serving food and during any activities outside the Detention Facility.
- Engages in training as required.
- May be assigned supervisory duties in the absence of a Corrections Facility Supervisor.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Transports arrestees to and from hospital services, other jail facilities, and other required locations without immediate supervision.
Performs limited field and support duties not requiring general law enforcement powers and that are not likely to result in physical arrests, as directed by the Police Department and as prescribed under P.C. 832.6. Must be a high school graduate or possess a G.E.D. certificate from an accredited school. Applicants must be at least 21 years of age or older at time of appointment. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law.
Experience: Experience and demonstrated ability to perform contemporary arrestee control and officer safety techniques related to a detention environment. Additional coursework or training in criminal justice or related field desirable.
Knowledge of: Physical restraint techniques, detention facility laws and codes; record keeping procedures, and basic computer knowledge.
Ability to: Independently enforce jail policies and procedures to ensure the safety and security of the jail; independently supervise, monitor, and transport inmates; make quick, sound, and independent decisions based on facts; appraise situations and people accurately and adopt and effective course of action; effectively read and write; communicate verbally and in writing; think and speak logically; understand complex reports and training materials; maintain firearms proficiency; act quickly and accurately in emergency situations; deal effectively with cultural and social conflict; demonstrate leadership skills; demonstrate sound observation skills; confront and solve problems; demonstrate interpersonal sensitivity; and establish and maintain effective working relationships
License/Certification Required: Possession and maintenance of a valid Level III module certificate from a California POST-approved reserve academy by end of the one-year probationary period. Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License by date of appointment, and as a condition of continued employment, an acceptable driving record prior to and throughout employment.
Police Reserve Level III Requirements: Incumbents shall have limited peace officer powers only while on duty and only when performing duties prescribed under P.C. 832.6. Employees will be assigned to numerous training programs, which will include the Standards and Training for Corrections (STC) Core course and completion of P.C. 832 powers of arrest and firearms training. Any applicant who has not successfully completed the STC Core course; or Supplemental Core course must pass the STC – Adult Corrections Officer entry level selection examination. These training programs must be successfully completed within the one-year probationary period.
Physical Conditions: Due to the nature of works assignments, incumbents must be able to use both hands, arms and legs; stoop and bend; lift up to and carry 165 pounds; maintain proper balance, stand and walk; climb stairs; work in confined spaces using applicable safety requirements, and protect self and others from physical attack; speak, hear, and understand radio communications.
All applicants must pass a physical agility test.

Mandatory Orientation & Written Exam: The City of Anaheim utilizes the Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC) entry-level Adult Corrections Officer selection examination. The written exam is tentatively scheduled for March 21, 2024 and/or March 22, 2024 at the Anaheim Police Department – Main Station.
Physical Ability Test: Candidates who achieve a passing score on the written exam will be invited to the physical ability test which is tentatively scheduled for TBD.

Oral Interview & Pre-Background Screening: Candidates who achieve a passing score on the physical ability test will be invited to oral interviews which is tentatively scheduled for TBD. Successful candidates will be interviewed by a background investigator after the oral interview.

Anaheim Police Department Blueprint - knowledge of the Anaheim Police Department Blueprint is required of all Police Department employees.
Further selection steps include, but are not limited to a background investigation, polygraph examination, psychological evaluation, a medical examination, which includes drug/alcohol screening, and an interview with the Chief of Police. The interview with the background investigator and completion of the background investigation will include, but is not limited to, verification and evaluation of any present and/or past use of drugs, driving and employment history.
