The City of Anaheim Public Library is seeking Part Time Library Assistants to provide excellent public service in a team-oriented library system.  We are looking for dynamic individuals to assist at public service desks, provide public programs, and excellent customer service. Positions assigned to this classification work under the moderate supervision of a full time Librarian. The ideal candidate will possess prior public library experience. 

About the Anaheim Public Library

There are ten Library outlets serving the City of Anaheim and surrounding communities. This includes our six branch libraries,  the self-service branch at ARTIC Transportation Center, the Anaheim Heritage Center which houses our local history collections and the Mobile Library that serves the Community Development Block Grant neighborhoods in the City. 

The Anaheim Public Library was recognized as the 2021 Library of the Year by Gale and Library Journal.  There are ten Library outlets serving the City of Anaheim and surrounding communities. This includes Central Library, six branch libraries, the self-service branch at ARTIC Transportation Center, the Anaheim Heritage Center which houses our local history collections, the Mobile Library that serves the Community Development Block Grant neighborhoods in the city, and STEAM Adventures: Explorations on Wheels which serves the science technology, engineering, the arts, and math (STEAM) needs of the Anaheim community.

 

This is a part-time position averaging 20 or 30 hours per week. A minimum of hours is not guaranteed. This position requires Saturday/Sunday and evening availability. Candidates must be available to travel to other branches as needed for coverage.

 

This recruitment will be used to fill multiple vacancies throughout the Anaheim Public Library system.

The following functions are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed functions and/or may be required to perform additional or different functions from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
 
 

  • Provide support to Librarians by providing Adult, Teen, and Youth programs. 

 

  • Assist patrons with basic reference and light research, utilizing standard print and non-print resources. Refer more difficult reference queries to appropriate professional staff.

 

  • Coordinate selected activities or services within the library.

 

  • Develop and conduct library programs including children’s story hour, outreach to schools and the community, class visits, and library tours.

 

  • Implement library policies and procedures; resolve patron concerns.

 

  • Assist with cataloging and processing books. 

 

  • Instruct patrons in the use of library resources such as technology equipment and online resources. 

 

  • May select books and other library materials.

 

  • Assists in grant writing.  

 

  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

 

Education and Experience: Previous public library experience in a senior clerical or paraprofessional job. A Bachelor of Arts degree is strongly preferred. An AA or Library Technology Certificate and equivalent paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree. 

 

Knowledge of: Literature; public library operations and automated systems, policies, and procedures; current events; conducting research and reference tools; library technical resources and troubleshooting of library equipment; developing presentations and age-appropriate programs; basic software application packages; basic math; basic scheduling methods; principles and practices of team building. Working with children and students is highly desirable.

 

Ability to: Work independently; use sound judgment and problem solving skills; communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing; develop and present programs; assist library patrons in material selection; listen effectively; use good judgment within the scope of authority; understand and carry out both oral and written instructions; handle stressful situations; recognize and resolve problems; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; answer a variety of general questions regarding library use; record data and maintain statistical records; assist in grant writing; write memos and reports.
