The City of Ankeny is accepting applications for full-time Firefighter EMT or Paramedic.
Applications are being accepted that will establish a Civil Service eligibility list in May 2024 for fulltime Firefighter EMT or Paramedic.

Applicants must meet the Entry Requirements and Skills section below to apply. Applicants must be currently certified as an EMT or higher, or be currently attending, or be currently enrolled in an EMT course to be selected for an interview and make the Civil Service List. Only applicants who are certified as an EMT or higher will be eligible for hire.
Written and physical ability evaluations are required for all positions. Information packets will be emailed to qualified applicants explaining the written and physical ability evaluation process and applicable dates for completing each process.
Successful completion of post-offer criminal background screening, drug test, psychological and medical physical required. Excellent wage and benefit package. Work schedule is a 24 hour on/48 hour off rotation averaging 2912 hours per year.
Effective 07/01/2023, starting hourly pay is:

Starting salary is $58,488.00 - $76,073.00, depending on qualifications.
*Current certified Paramedics with the appropriate experience as stated below are eligible for lateral transfers if they meet the following conditions. Effective 07/01/2023:
- Completion of 12 months (1 year) as a FT Paramedic at another agency or a PT Paramedic for the Ankeny Fire Department shall be paid at Step 2 ($23.695).
- Completion of 24 months (2 years) as a FT Paramedic at another agency or a PT Paramedic for the Ankeny Fire Department shall be paid at Step 3 ($24.880).
- Completion of 36 months (3 years) as a FT Paramedic at another agency or a PT Paramedic for the Ankeny Fire Department shall be paid at Step 4 ($26.124).

Responds to emergencies and performs pre-hospital care, fire suppression activities, rescue, damage control, and property preservation.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to understand and carry out written and verbal instructions in English.
- Ability to write in English with a minimum number of spelling and grammatical errors.
- Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers and function as a team member.
REQUIRED SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Shall possess a current State of Iowa Emergency Medical Services certification at time of hire and must obtain Paramedic certification within 24 months of hire.
- Shall possess Iowa Fire Fighter I, II and Hazardous Material Operations Level certification or equivalent within 18 months of hire.
- Shall possess or obtain ICS 100, 200, 700 and 800 within 18 months of hire.
- Shall possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license issued by the State of Iowa and be insurable to operate city vehicles and equipment.
- Must be able to perform functions as detailed in the Firefighting and EMS General Description of Duties document.
- Must be able to pass a physical ability test.
- Must be able to pass the physical exam per the requirements of the Iowa Municipal Fire and Police and Retirement System for FT personnel.

- Proof of Basic Life Support (CPR) Certification
- Iowa or National EMT, Advanced EMT or Paramedic Certification card
- Fire Fighter I and/or II certifications if you have them
- IO Solutions, National Firefighter Selection Inventory Certificate (these are valid for 12 months. You must have a valid certificate on file by April 12, 2024).
- Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) or the Central Iowa Fire & EMS Testing Consortium Physical Ability Test (These are valid for 12 months. You must have a valid certificate on file by April 12, 2024).
