About our opportunity:
The City of Asheville is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Fleet Shop Supervisor within the Public Works Department, Fleet Management division. The purpose of this position is to perform technical, administrative, and automotive work overseeing the repair and maintenance of the fleet of motor vehicles, heavy equipment, and support equipment. The hours are Monday - Thursday 7 am - 6 pm.
- Manages workflow of vehicle repairs by ensuring available staffing and equipment, assessing repair needs, obtaining estimates on time, parts, tools, and equipment needs, and monitoring progress.
- Provides customer service by communicating with customers to identify concerns, providing feedback throughout the repair process, and determining the most cost-effective methods.
- Manages department bills by ensuring vendor invoice charges are accurate, entering invoices into fleet software, and paying vendors.
- Provides reports on productivity, scheduled maintenance, repeat repairs, warranty repairs, end-of-month expenses, mileage, and credit card expenses.
- Supervises employees by locating training opportunities, setting employee goals and objectives, managing employee leave, and maintaining schedules.
- Provides leadership in organizational goals and initiatives related to cultural competence.
- Maintains fuel station by establishing and adhering to fuel station procedures, monitoring proper equipment and tool maintenance, and ensuring compliance with OSHA and regulatory agency requirements.
- Coordinates with external vendors by communicating repair needs, ensuring cost-effectiveness, verifying the status of the repair and maintaining records of warranty repairs.
- Associate’s degree or equivalent from a vocational, technical, business or correspondence school in a related field with three (3) to five (5) years of automotive/emergency vehicle/heavy truck maintenance experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
- Preferred Licensing, Certifications, and Experience:
- ASE Certified Master Auto Technician.
- ASE Certified Master Medium-Heavy Truck Technician.
- ASE Certified Light Duty Hybrid/Electric Vehicle Specialist
- EVT Certified Level I Fire Apparatus.
- EVT Management Certification.
- Supervisory experience preferred.
Applicants with equivalent experience and/or education may be considered.
- Ability to read, summarize and/or compare general workplace data and graphics, such as flow charts, maps, tables, etc.

- Ability to compile data into a technical report and share with a direct supervisor or department director.
