GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: The Engineering Inspector serves as the liaison between contractors (working principally through the contractor’s superintendent) and the City of Aurora’s Engineering Department. This position is responsible for the daily schedule of engineering inspection-related projects and completes other work as required, including on-site observations and inspections of the work in progress to ensure that it is in accordance with the project documents. This position reports to the Assistant Director of Public Services and/or the City Engineer.

RESPONSIBILITES AND DUTIES:

  • Responsibilities include both capital and development projects.
  • Performs onsite inspections of the construction, repair or replacement of new roads, sanitary sewers, storm sewers, water towers, water lines, city parks and trails, etc.
  • Assists in the repair, maintenance, and inspection of city infrastructure.
  • Inspection of compliance of sediment and erosion control methods and other NPDES requirements.
  • Verifies that all contractors on jobs are licensed with the City.
  • Assists in the investigation of resident complaints.
  • Coordinates when field changes become necessary.
  • Responsible for generation and completion of punch lists for related projects.
  • Attends contractor meetings such as pre-construction meetings, progress meetings, job conferences, and other project related meetings.
  • Assists the City Engineer in reviewing and updating specifications on construction materials and methods of installing materials.
  • Observes, records, and reports to the Assistant Director and/or City Engineer details relative to the test procedures and systems start-up.
  • Prepares a daily construction report recording contractor’s hours on the site, weather conditions, data relative to questions or work change directives, change orders, field orders or changed conditions, site visitors, field quantities, daily activities, decisions, observations in general, and specific observations in more detail as in the case of observing test procedures.
  • Performs final grade and occupancy inspections for new construction.
  • Accompanies visiting inspectors representing public and/or other agencies having jurisdiction over the projects. Records the results of these inspections, and reports to the Assistant Director and/or City Engineer.
  • Records and reports any changes that are made in the field.
  • Tracks time to be charged back to developers.
  • Other duties as required.

SPECIALIZED TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Thorough knowledge of modern methods and techniques of construction and maintenance of municipal facilities is required.
  • Best Management Practices (BMPs) and National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) knowledge preferred.
  • Working knowledge of sanitary sewers, water lines, storm sewers, pavement and their appurtenances.
  • Ability to interpret engineering records.
  • Ability to make concise technical reports.
  • Comfortable with making decisions, which may be unpopular and taking direct, positive actions is required.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, AND TRAINING:

  • A minimum of two (2) years of related experience or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • A high school diploma or GED is required. Graduation from an accredited college/university with an Associate/BS in Construction and Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or a related field is preferred.
  • Qualified Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector (QESI) certification is preferred.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 or more pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Employee may be exposed to a variety of weather conditions, including extreme variations in temperature. Employee may be exposed to traffic, exhaust fumes, and dust while performing the duties of the position.

Employee is required to wear/use all Personal Protective Equipment as assigned.
