Job Description

The City of Avondale is accepting applications for Recruit Firefighters in order to establish an eligibility list for hiring. This position requires both an NTN FireTEAM test and a valid CPAT. All testing must be completed by June, 3, 2023. Please read the entire posting carefully.

Salary: Compensation will be based upon a 56-hour workweek at $17.74 per hour for Firefighter recruits. Avondale Fire & Medical work a 48/96 schedule.

The Firefighter protects life and property through emergency incident intervention; provides advanced life support emergency medical service. Conducts community service activities including community education, commercial inspection, and code enforcement. Ensures readiness through the facility, apparatus, equipment, and personal maintenance. Performs general administrative functions. Completes special projects or tasks that further the departmental mission.

You must complete a City of Avondale employment application AND complete testing through National Testing Network by 06.03.2023 (www.nationaltestingnetwork.com). Individuals who do not complete both portions of the process will be disqualified. Please list your CPAT testing and expiration date in your employment application. CPAT examinations are considered to be valid for one year after successful completion. Recruits must maintain a valid CPAT examination through the date of hire with the City of Avondale.

Essential Functions

Protects life and property through emergency incident response. Responds to and mitigates emergency 911 calls. Performs firefighting and rescue incident scene activities; provides emergency medical care and patient transport. Drives and operates fire apparatus in the absence of a Fire Engineer.

Provides community services. Represents community education and/or school-based education programs. Provides emergency medical standby and public relations services at city special events. Provides a variety of non-emergency services including vehicle lockouts, smoke detector checks, and commercial fire safety inspections.

Performs facility, apparatus, and equipment maintenance. Performs routine vehicle inspections and minor vehicle maintenance. Performs daily station cleaning and grounds maintenance. Conducts routine maintenance and inspection of a variety of emergency service equipment.

Participates in scheduled skill-based training, medical and emergency service training, health and fitness training, and a variety of continuing education programs.

Provides general administrative documentation for emergency calls, patient encounter forms, hospital reports, incident response data entry, and various maintenance logs and request forms.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalency
  • Valid Arizona Class D driver's license required at time of hire.
  • Arizona or National Registry EMT certification is required.
  • Arizona certification must be obtained within six months of hire.
  • Basic personal computer skills required.

Preferred:

  • A valid Arizona or National Registry Paramedic certification is preferred.

Hiring preference will be given to those candidates possessing a paramedic certification.

Supplemental Information

Work requires the ability to read professional journals, technical reports, administrative policies and procedures, operational guidelines, training manuals, codes, standards, and general correspondence.

Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Work requires the ability to write patient encounter forms, incident reports, daily activity/shift reports, and professional correspondence.

Planning responsibilities include organizing daily activities.

Paramedics may supervise others providing emergency medical care.

Work requires analysis and judgment in accomplishing diversified duties. Work requires the exercise of independent thinking within the limits of policies, standards, and precedents.

The incumbents in this position contact others within the organization. These contacts may involve similar work units or departments within the City such as Police and Community/Recreation Services which may be involved in decision making or providing approval or decision-making authority for purchases or projects. In addition, these incumbents work with individuals outside the City who may belong to professional or peer organizations. Working with various state and federal agencies may also be required of the employee. Vendors and suppliers may also be called upon for information on purchases, supplies, or products. Meetings and discussions may be conducted with customers, brokers, and sales representatives. The employee must maintain regular attendance. Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
