Under direct supervision of the Building Maintenance/Custodial Crew Leader, performs responsible building maintenance for various buildings of the City. Employees in this class exercise appropriate safety precautions in handling chemical agents to ensure personal, public, and personnel safety. Performs related work as required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Operates various types of equipment in construction, maintenance, cleaning, and repair of City buildings.
- Uses appropriate chemicals and cleaners safely and productively according to instructions to ensure personal, public, and personnel safety.
- Performs custodial tasks when needed or in the event of a diminished crew, i.e., emptying and cleaning waste receptacles; mopping floors; washing windows; dusting furniture; cleaning vents, fans, walls; sanitizing restrooms, kitchen facilities.
- Performs building maintenance tasks, i.e., replacing light bulbs and air filters, repairing door components, and any other building maintenance needs, assembling chairs, desks, filling dispensers, etc.
- Responds to work orders in a timely manner.
- Communicates through email, verbal, and in writing in a timely and efficient manner.
- Moves furniture and other equipment, as needed, in the performance of duties.
- Cleans equipment and tools after use and maintains cleanliness and order in storage areas and service vehicle.
- Reports facility maintenance needs upon detection to immediate supervisor.
- Performs daily maintenance checks on all facilities, orders custodial materials and equipment, and services equipment such as vacuum cleaner belts, etc.
- Performs all job duties in accordance with all approved safety rules and procedures and promptly reports all accidents, injuries, theft, loss, and broken or damaged equipment or property to the immediate supervisor.
- Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours is essential.
- Serves as an extension of current duties as required for emergency management and is required remain available for immediate call-in due to any natural or man-made disaster, as directed by the City Manager.
- Required to work overtime as needed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or required.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
A. Training and Experience:
- High school diploma, GED is required.
- Six (6) months to one (1) year of work that demonstrates the ability to assist the Building Maintenance/Custodial Crew Leader safely and effectively in maintenance of all City buildings, including any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Valid Texas Driver’s license with an acceptable driving record to be maintained throughout employment.
B. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Working knowledge of appropriate safety measures and precautions to exercise in handling chemical agents, power, and carpentry tools.
- Effective verbal communication skills are required.
- Ability to read and comprehend English, such as that rendered in warning labels and cleaning instructions.
- Must be able to develop and maintain positive working relationships with City staff, vendors, and the general public with whom the position interacts.
- Ability to assist in all phases of building maintenance, i.e., minor electrical/water repairs, vacuuming, dusting, mopping, sanitizing, recordkeeping, and preventative maintenance schedule.
- Ability to work independently or assist Building Maintenance Crew Leader by getting quotes from various contractors to perform maintenance such as: plumbing, HVAC, and electrical work.
C. Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
- Some tasks involve some physical effort, i.e., some standing and walking, or frequent light lifting (5-10 pounds); or minimal dexterity in the use of fingers, limbs, or body in the operation of shop or office equipment; may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.
- Some tasks involve frequent walking, standing; some lifting and carrying of moderate weight (12-20 pounds); and/or the operation of vehicles, office, shop, or hand tools in which manipulative skills and hand-eye coordination are important ingredients of safe and/or productive operations.
- Some tasks involve the regular, and at times sustained, performance of heavier tasks such as walking over rough or uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, working in confined spaces, and lifting or carrying heavy (20-50 pounds) items and occasionally heavier (100 pounds ) items.
D. Environmental Requirements:
- Some tasks may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions (e.g., dirt, cold, rain, fumes).
- Some tasks may require exposure to strong odors and/or smoke.
- Some tasks may require exposure to strong and/or toxic chemicals.
- Some tasks may require exposure to dust and pollen.
