Don’t just visit Bend – Live in Bend! The City of Bend Police Department is actively recruiting for full-time Lateral Police Officers. We are recruiting for only 7 positions at this time. This recruitment will be used to fill these vacancies and establish a list for upcoming openings. The eligibility list may be canceled at any time, at the discretion of the City.
Lateral Officers are eligible for the following:
- Competitive pay - $71,552 - $104,520 annual salary (not including overtime)
- $7,500 bonus ($3,750 upon hire and $3,750 upon successful completion of probationary period)
- Moving expenses reimbursement (up to $1,000)
- 40 hours of sick time awarded upon hiring
- 40 hours of vacation time awarded upon hiring
- 11.25-hour schedule, four working days followed by four days off to enjoy Central Oregon

Hiring Process Phases:
The Bend Police Department selection includes the following components:

- Oral Board Interview and Oregon Physical Agility Testing (mid-June)

Lateral Wages and Benefits*:
Below is a wage scale matrix used by the Bend Police Department as a guide - it does not guarantee a specific rate of pay. Factors considered in a lateral applicant's entry wage are based on time of Police experience only. "Police Experience" refers to municipal, county, and state police agencies. Corrections, reserve officer, security officer, and federal officer experience does not fulfill our requirement for certified police experience needed as a lateral applicant.
Successful lateral candidates will be offered a pay step according to the following guidelines:

In addition, Police Officers can qualify for a $1.15 per hour increase for demonstrated fluency in an eligible language (such as Spanish or American Sign Language). Pay listed is for regular hours worked. Police Officers also have opportunities to work overtime assignments which can further increase pay.
Signing Bonus: A signing bonus made up of the following elements will be offered to successful lateral candidates:

Medical, vision, and prescription coverage Benefit:
Full-time employees currently pay a monthly premium is $58.13. A full-time employee and dependent(s) pay a monthly premium of $145.33 per month. This plan also includes a city-funded Health Reimbursement Account with many options on how your funds are utilized.

- Carries out the mission of the agency as defined in the mission statement; models and promotes the core values of the organization.
- Performs a variety of law enforcement duties. As a first responder to incidents, serves as a direct link between the department and the public. Duties involve responding to and investigating incident and crime scenes, taking action at incidents, proactively patrolling assigned areas, engaging in information lead policing activities and making independent decisions to deter criminal activity. Enforcing laws and ordinances, making arrests, preserving crime scene evidence and performing preventative community policing. May be assigned to specialized units or teams in the department.

Experience and Training:
- Academy Certification: Must currently be a certified officer within the State of Oregon, or if an out-of-state applicant must be able to obtain reciprocity of certification granted by the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training as a Law Enforcement Officer.
- High school diploma or equivalent and at least two years of college coursework /at time of application; or have served in the military with an Honorable Discharge or any equivalent combination of Law Enforcement work experience.
- Must be a minimum age of 21 years.
- Oregon Drivers License upon hire.
- Must successfully pass a comprehensive background investigation including criminal history check and obtain an Oregon State Police Criminal Justice Information Systems clearance.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work in a 24-hour environment with varied shifts including weekends and holidays. Duties are primarily performed on patrol in an assigned geographical area where the employee is exposed to varying and extreme weather conditions. When responding to emergencies, employee risks physical hazard from violent, aggressive, and hostile people, a variety of weapons, noise, chemicals, bodily secretions, sharp objects, traffic, drugs and drug paraphernalia and crime scenes. Physical exertion is required to climb stairs, go over walls, run, move heavy objects, crawl through tight spaces, kneel in confined areas and sit for a long period of time during surveillance. Physical effort is required to lift materials, equipment, and persons exceeding 75 lbs, and subdue combative persons.
