The City of Biddeford, one of Maine’s most resurgent communities, has an amazing opportunity for a Deputy Fire Chief within our evolving Fire Department. The department is focused on training, wellness and a positive culture as we remain extremely busy during this ever changing healthcare climate. The City of Biddeford has experienced an economic revival centered on a nationally-recognized creative community in our downtown. Once expected to dwindle in population, a growing Biddeford is now the youngest community in Maine and is continuing to transform as new residents and entrepreneurs are attracted to the community.

The ideal Deputy Fire Chief will have experience working as both a firefighter and EMT, as well as supervisory experience within a Fire Department. We are looking for someone well versed in personnel issues and navigating employee relations with an emphasis on collaborative planning and conflict resolution. They will also be on call every three weeks.

This position assists the Fire Chief with oversight of 48 full time EMS-Firefighters, 25 call company members and a call company Division Chief and District Chief. Our Department is very fast paced, responding to over 5,900 emergency calls annually within the 39 square miles of Biddeford’s both rural and urban settings. We work closely with neighboring towns, priding ourselves on our ability to provide and utilize mutual and automatic aid.

The City of Biddeford offers a robust compensation package. This includes paid personal, sick and vacation time as well as employer sponsored dental, vision and health insurance with a companion Health Reimbursement Account fully funded by the City to pick up additional healthcare costs for its employees. We have a student loan repayment program allowing the City to pay portions of its employees’ outstanding loans. We offer several retirement plans, with a match by the City, including MPERS.

Requirements for the Deputy Chief position include:

  • 2 years of fire service supervisory experience
  • 6 years of experience as a career firefighter
  • High School education or equivalent
  • EMT certification
  • Firefighter II Certification (from state of Maine or state with reciprocity)
  • Valid Driver’s License

Desired Qualifications for the Deputy Chief position include:

  • Paramedic Certification
  • Associate’s Degree or higher

Pay: $73,000.00 - $97,000.00 per year

Schedule:

  • 8 hour shift
  • Monday to Friday
  • On call

Ability to commute/relocate:

  • Biddeford, ME 04005: Reliably commute or planning to relocate before starting work (Preferred)

Experience:

  • Supervisory Fire Service: 2 years (Preferred)

License/Certification:

  • EMT Certification (Preferred)
  • Firefighter II Certification (Preferred)
