Foster Program Intern

Position Starts April 28, 2025

The Foster Program Intern will be exposed to all aspects of operations within a progressive, open admissions municipal animal shelter. This position will develop skills in leadership, collaborative planning, customer service and more. The chosen candidate will assist in the further growth of a robust foster program that saw 56% of shelter animals go into foster homes in 2024.

Assist in the restructuring and implementation of our Foster First program, by streamlining the current process to better suite both staff needs and public expectations. 

Interns will create standard operating procedures and documents and train existing staff on program updates.

Develops a "Marketing Your Foster Animal" training course to assist fosters in helping their foster animals homes.  

Presents at this training to a live audience; records this training for online utilization.

Assists in the presentation of other Continuing Education Foster Training Series programs.

Assists in the development of a Foster Medical Line to allow more direct access between foster families and staff both during and after hours.  

Develops guidelines for weekly foster features on social media platforms.  Identifies criteria for feature and efficient means of information being shared.

Will help to find adoptive homes for animals in foster more quickly.

Creates twice weekly foster pleas featuring animals most in need of foster homes.

Assists fosters in matching with animals.

Gathers supplies for fosters.



Equivalent to a High School Diploma. 

 A current driver's license.

Interest in animal welfare and willingness to learn how to effectively and safely work with all species in a shelter environment.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace.

Ability to work in a fast paced and demanding environment.


Experience in program development.

Public speaking.

Experience in web administration; website development.

Experience working with and/or caring for animals.

Ability to be self-motivated with minimal supervision, in a fast paced environment.


Performs duties both indoors and out of doors in varied weather conditions and is exposed to hazards associated with the handling of frightened, vicious, and/or diseased animals. Incumbent is subject to threat of exposure to rabies, animal feces, and bodily fluids, animal diseases that can be contagious to humans, external and internal parasites, and to toxic substances, such as disinfectants and corrosive cleaners. Incumbent is subject to exposure to animals that may be aggressive or in poor health condition.
