Solid Waste Equipment Operator I

As a Solid Waste Equipment Operator I, you are responsible for operating and maintaining solid waste collection vehicles and equipment used in the collection and disposal of refuse and recycling materials within the City of Borger. Reporting to the Solid Waste Supervisor or a designated supervisor, you will safely operate collection vehicles, service residential and commercial routes, and ensure compliance with solid waste disposal regulations. 1. Vehicle Operation: Safely operate solid waste collection vehicles, including garbage trucks, recycling trucks, and other specialized equipment, following designated routes and schedules to collect refuse and recycling materials from residential and commercial properties.
2. Route Servicing: Service assigned routes by emptying refuse and recycling containers into collection vehicles, using hydraulic lifters or manual methods as needed, and ensuring that all waste materials are properly collected and transported to designated disposal sites.
3. Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance and inspections on collection vehicles and equipment, including pre-trip inspections, fluid checks, and minor repairs, to ensure safe and efficient operation at all times.
4. Customer Interaction: Interact with residents and business owners in a courteous and professional manner, addressing inquiries, concerns, and service requests related to solid waste collection and disposal services.
5. Compliance Monitoring: Monitor collection activities to ensure compliance with solid waste disposal regulations, environmental standards, and safety protocols, reporting any violations or discrepancies to the Solid Waste Supervisor or appropriate authorities.
6. Waste Sorting: Sort and separate recyclable materials from non-recyclable waste materials, following established guidelines and procedures for recycling and waste diversion.
7. Documentation: Maintain accurate records of daily collection activities, including route sheets, mileage logs, and disposal tickets, documenting any issues, incidents, or maintenance activities as required.
8. Team Collaboration: Work collaboratively with other solid waste personnel, including drivers, helpers, and maintenance staff, to coordinate collection efforts, address operational challenges, and ensure the timely completion of assigned tasks.
9. Safety Awareness: Adhere to safety policies and procedures at all times, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), safe driving practices, and compliance with traffic laws and regulations.
10. Environmental Stewardship: Promote environmental stewardship and sustainability initiatives within the community, including education and outreach efforts related to waste reduction, recycling, and proper disposal practices.

• High school diploma or equivalent required; additional vocational training or certification in heavy equipment operation preferred.
• Minimum of one year of experience operating heavy trucks or equipment in a solid waste collection or related field preferred.
• Valid commercial driver's license (CDL) required; clean driving record and ability to meet DOT medical certification requirements.
• Knowledge of solid waste collection principles, practices, and regulations, including safety standards and environmental compliance requirements.
• Ability to operate solid waste collection vehicles and equipment safely and efficiently, including automated side loaders, front loaders, and roll-off trucks.
• Strong communication and customer service skills, with the ability to interact professionally with residents, business owners, and coworkers.
• Physical stamina and strength to perform heavy lifting, bending, and repetitive tasks in various weather conditions.
• Willingness to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays, to accommodate the operational needs of the solid waste department.
