Key Responsibilities
- Patrols city streets by vehicle, foot, or other means to prevent and detect crime.
- Responds to incidents including suspicious activity, traffic collisions, domestic disturbances, and citizen complaints.
- Investigates crimes and accidents; gathers evidence, interviews witnesses, and prepares reports.
- Apprehends suspects and prepares for prosecution, including providing courtroom testimony.
- Supervises and supports shift operations in the absence of the Supervisor; assigns and reviews work, answers questions, and assists with officer training.
- Builds positive relationships with community members and local organizations.
- Maintains and ensures proper care of assigned equipment, including vehicles and weapons.
- Assists with emergency operations, evacuations, and disaster response.
Education & Experience:
- Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice or a related field preferred.
- Minimum 3–5 years of progressive law enforcement experience, including supervisory coursework.
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
- Current North Carolina Law Enforcement Officer Certification.
- Valid North Carolina Driver’s License.
- Certifications in firearms, radar, and breathalyzer operations.
- Strong knowledge of law enforcement methods, local/state/federal laws, and department procedures.
- Skilled in de-escalation, conflict resolution, and emergency response.
- Capable of exercising sound judgment and leadership in high-pressure situations.
- Proficient in using law enforcement technology, report writing, and court testimony.
- Effective communicator—both written and verbal—with strong interpersonal skills.
- Physically capable of performing duties including heavy lifting, running, climbing, and extended periods of standing or walking.
- Work includes exposure to indoor/outdoor environments and hazards such as dangerous persons, traffic, and hazardous materials.
- Must meet physical demands of law enforcement, including use of force and emergency response.
